I invited one friend’s significant other, but she’s good friends with another friend so I invited her live-in boyfriend; so I couldn’t invite one and not the other
Problem is the guest we really wanted couldnt make it; meanwhile my other friend’s guest said yes–I would have never invited him if my the first guest couldn’t make it
now my friend is telling me she is having an argument with her boyfriend and may be leaving his home; but knowing her they may be back again in a week
so should I count him or not?

Well, it sounds like he’s already invited. Let her know you need a definite answer by (date) and that if she’s not sure she wants to bring him she should come alone, or maybe bring another friend. Do you think that sounds too harsh? Most of my friends who are in casual or on/off relationships don’t mind commiting to plans without a date.

well I gave her a deadline of 5 days before which is the absolute deadline before tI commit to my caterer; just afraid they may be on again and he shows up

I understand you want to know a final guest count, but it sounds like the +1 is already invited. I would assume she is bringing him and just let the chips fall. At the end of the day, you are never going to have a 100% accurate count anyway. People will always change their minds, but if you count the extra 1, you will be covered either way.

except it looks more off than on plus my plate is $246/head, not something I want to waste

Does your venue make a certain % more food than you order for guests who “just show up”? I only ask because mine DOES. If yours does as well I wouldn’t count him and just see what happens. If it doesn’t then I would count him, even though it appears it’s going to cost you a lot of money.
