I am mortified and need to vent.
I just saw a movie with a friend and she was SO rude…I cannot believe it.
She had her phone in her lap and was texting the whole time. She has it set so that the LED camera light flashes when people call her and someone called her during the movie. And yes, the light flashed. She kind of blocked it but it was still very visible.
She brought a burrito and CRUMPLED the paper while putting it away for like 15 seconds at a part with no talking.
She brought a bottle of water (one of those hard plastic ones that are reusable) full of ice cubes in it and when the water was done, she POURED the ice to her mouth, making the crashing noise on the way down, and then put it down making all the ice crash down at the bottom of the bottle – LIKE 25 TIMES IN THE MOVIE.
And she is not a whisperer….she like, talked in the movie. I felt like apologizing to everyone around me =(
In her defense, she did hate the movie…but still!!!! I loved it&I’m sure the completely full theatre would have appreciated a nice movie-going experience.
Have you ever had a friend like this? How did you handle it?
Needless to say, I am probably never going to the movies with this person ever again. Am I overreacting???

Not overreacting at all! I’m crazy about people in theaters that are disrespectful. I love, love, love going to the movies and they’re SO expensive nowasays that I want to get my money’s worth. I’ve actually gone to complain about people texting before.
I would just flat out refuse to go to the movies with her again unless you felt comfortable enough talking to her about her behavior and you felt certain she wouldn’t behave like that again.

I couldn’t go to the movies with someone like that. I would tell her you won’t go with her to a movie again unless she promises to turn off her phone and not bring in noisy foods.

@MissOtter31: Thank you SO much for validating me. I’m like, am I overreacting here?!?! It’s so rude and it reaaally bothers me when other people do it.. Lol.
@SoupyCat: Agreed in full…I think I will have to!

That is so annoying. My uncle eats whole apples in the movies. All you hear is “CRUNCH” every five seconds when he bites into them. So embarrassing.

My friend used to do some of those things but I told her if she keeps it up that I will never go to the movies with her anymore

I have a friend like this. Not only does he text through out the whole movie, he doesn’t even bother to avert the phone or dim the lights on it. It catches everyone’s eyes. More annoying is the fact he falls asleep so easily anywhere and snores. Not just gentle snoring but the kind that is loud and have no pattern to them. It’s like listening to an intermittent machine gun. Top it all off, when anyone tells him anything, he just shrugs it off. After the last time, my husband and I decided never to go to the movies with him again!

Well… I do text in the movies sometimes, but I always turn the brightness down all the way. Like yesterday, Darling Husband and I went to a movie. My BFF is in Chicago on vacation, and she texted me saying she had a UTI, and what should she do? So I texted her saying to go to a CVS minute clinic. I wasn’t going to trample over everyone to get out of the movie theater to text her. That would have been more disruptive than a quick text.
Loud eating is annoying, but I’m sure I’ve been guilty of that. They sell nachos, and those are kind of crunchy. Also, your friend should use a straw and ignore the ice. That’s a little over the top.
As for talking, that is a BIG no-no. DH does NOT know how to whisper, and I have to pinch him sometimes to make him shut up, lol.
But overall, I’m a really easy going person, and I don’t get distracted easily. So none of these behaviors in other people really annoy me that much. It’s a movie theater, and if you can’t handle things like this, you should probably just not go to movies. I tend to give a LOT of grace to people.
I know most people think differently from me, though, so I understand why you are embarrassed. :). Just don’t go with her again! 🙂

That would have pissed me off immensely! I hate it when people make any sort of noise in cinemas, they’re so expensive that we a hardly ever go so I really want to enjoy it when we do go. I definitely wouldn’t go with her again.
How much are tickets in the US just out of interest? It was £25 for two 3d tickets when I went recently. So about 20 dollars a ticket. My phone doesn’t do dollar signs sorry!

@ChuckNorris: Did you tell her to be quiet? I would have.
The last time I was at a movie there was these talkers behind me. Finally I (very obviously) turned my head and glared at the them. They were quiet after that.

@mrshunnybunches: there is no good reason to text during a movie! It is very distracting to people around you. It’s a very selfish way of thinking. If something is important enought that it can not wait an hour to be addressed, you should leave the theater. Or how about simply not looking at your phone for 90 min??? This is such a pet peeve.

@nicci218: It depends… At a theater where you get reserved seats, it’s about $13-15, regular, no 3D. For a normal theater, it’s $11 – 12.50. DH and I usually go to a theater near our house that has matinees for $5.75. If we want a non-matinee, I get pre-paid tix at work for $8.

@mrshunnybunches: Yes I agree with @mamadingdong: . It’s not as distracting as talking, but the light and the tapping can still be annoying. If it’s important, leave the theatre. If it’s not, wait.

I live in a small town (used to live in the big city!) so movies here are actually really cheap. 6-7 bucks each now. Some 3D ones are more expensive but not by much. Where I’m from movies are lik 12.50 a pop!!! lol.

during the second batman movie (midnight premiere) this skinny dude two seats down from me kept opening his phone up.
i leaned over and asked him to put it away because the light was distracting.
he opened it again.
i leaned over and slapped it shut.
he did this HUFF noise of annoyance.
i said “keep it shut or i will sit on you.”
he kept it shut.
