You should just stop helping her out via FB Messenger. That will get them to buy a cellphone.

I think you need more info from your friend. What is required of the emergency contact? I assume it’s for just that- an emergency. Like others have said, 911 will be called if the child is truly having an emergency and you should NOT be asked to pick up a sick child under any circumstances. Why not also bring up with your friend that she REALLY needs to get a cell phone now that she has a child attending day care?

However, lets say that the parents are both in a car accident and grandma is at the hospital with your friend, do I think you should be willing to go get the child? Sure. I’m sure you could figure out the car seat thing pretty easily.

I wouldn’t worry too much – if it does become a hassle, just ask your friend to be removed. Let her know you cant leave work to go pick up her child unless its an EXTREME circumstance.

I think putting your name down without asking is wildly inappropriate.  Yes, the emergency contact is rarely used.  But when I’m picking who to put on that list, I’m thinking “if I die in a car crash on the way to pick up my kids, this is the person they’re gonna call.  This is the person who will hold my crying child when they find out that I’m gone.”  You don’t thrust that responsibility on someone without asking first.
