Willow90:  I grew my hair out to donate it and I got to this point as well. I went online to get ideas and then to youtube for tutorials on how to do stuff. I learned to french braid my hair first, which helped a ton plus it got my hair out of the way. Next I learned how to dutch braid, essentially a french braid but it stands up and looks so much more posh/chic 😉 Plus it was stinkin’ easy. After that I learned sideways braids and different bun ideas (which I could only wear half the day because I’d get a ferocious headache from the weight of my hair).

Good luck! Are you going to donate it after the wedding? Locks of love only needs 10 inches… Jus’ sayin’

Oh and recently I learned how to dutch braid the bottom and have it meet up with the hair from the top for a bun, looked very awesome 🙂

Taiki:  Thank you for that link!  I love those type clips but only find beaded ones locally. Which don’t work for me as when the elastic stretches over, my hair gets between beads and knots up horribly. The covered ones look wonderful. Plus, I got a bow one, I’m thinking on non work days, I can just use that to hold up my sleep braid.

Willow90:  have you thought about adding layers that won’t take length off the bottom- just the top layers so it keeps the length but becomes more lightweight and has more volume?  I also have really long, thick hair.  I got layers to help out and I love them :).  (Here’s an old pic… Maybe 6mos ago)

My hair is waist length and its so boring! I wear it the same way every day- down and straight. It looks awful when up (and makes me look manly and huge for some reason) and I dont suit a braid. I can curl it but it takes up to an hour and doesnt hold great 🙁 I think i’m just destined for boring hair!

When I had waist-length hair I loved putting it up in Heidi braid.

It’s basically just pigtail braids then pin them over the top of your head with bobby pins. It takes a few practice rounds to get right but then it’s super great.

On special occasions I would braid ribbon through the braids too. You can also place cute pins/flowers/accessories throughout the braids.

Edit: The Dutch braid is also pretty easy, just an inside-out French braid. I used to do this quite a bit too when I wanted it up and out of the way.

I posted this in another long hair related thread already, but I really like waterfall braids. I’ve tried doing them myself a few times, but have never been successful — they’re tricky, but beautiful IMO. I’m not really a fan of braids in general though. They come off as too “Heidi” to me and remind me of being a little girl. I’m in the U.S. though and I feel like braids might be more popular abroad. I actually don’t see braids of any kind very often day-to-day.

I also think that adding highlights helps give some added life to long hair.

CelloGirl:  I also love spin pins for the times when I don’t want to wear a visible hair accessory. A lot of the time I wear it in a plain three strand braid, in a classic ballerina bun, or in a nautilus bun. When my hair was closer to waist length, I would wear it in ponytails too, but at the moment I prefer wearing it in braids to keep it less prone to tangles.

CelloGirl: I hope you find them useful. A friend of mine (who often accidentally sits on her hair!) put me onto them. I’ve seen the bead variations as well, no good, my hair would eat them. I’ve never seen a bow one in RL, I look forward to a review.

Mine is a little longer than bra strap length, and I often wear it in these little clips to the side.http://www.goody.com/Products/Hair_Accessories/classics-double-bar-bobby-slides.  I switch up the sides to change it up a little. I also wear it half up with a clip.  This kind holds my hair up the best. http://www.amazon.com/Scunci-Midi-Linziclip-1-ea/dp/B002QA76R2. I don’t often wear it all up, but I do like the way it looks in just a simple pony, since it looks so sleek.  I don’t like the way my hair looks in a braid.

I like my hair so much better when it’s curly or wavy, but to curl it with an iron takes so long.  I like to sleep with my slightly damp hair in a bun to give it a little wave with no work.
