I’m so heartbroken today. A few weeks ago, my husband got bit by the neighbors dog. He went to their house to deliver a package to them that had been mistakenly delivered to our house. Looking back now though, we don’t think it was mistake, but rather on purpose, as this has been ongoing for a while now – us getting their packages at our back door. I think my husband was the 6th person she had bit, at least that is what the neighbor said. My husband had his gun out ready to shoot the dog, but the owners came out at the last split second & stopped him. I cant say I would have blamed my husband, though I love animals so much! He wasn’t just going to the dog continue to bite him…so I totally get it. ***To clear up any confusion, my husband is a police officer and carries with him everywhere he goes! He has a small, handheld…fits in the palm of your hand 22 cal. that stays in his pocket…it goes with him everywhere. He didn’t go over to the neighbors house, with the intention to shoot the dog…it just so happened the dog attacked him, kept going at him, so he pulled his little 22 out & was ready to shoot the dog, until the neighbors came out and stopped him – WHILE HE WAS BEING ATTACKED!***
Well…last week this same dog, with her sidekick, attacked our dog, Layla, in the back yard, while she was trying to go potty. Layla had a small bite mark on the back of her leg from it & it bled some, but it wasn’t anything too serious. I called the neighbors & spoke to the wife & told her what happened to Layla getting attacked. She apologized over & over for it & said they would be increasing the voltage of the electric fence. That’s never really worked in the past, hence this dog has been aggressive towards several people. I will add though, this dog has always been sweet to me. She would greet me sometimes in the mornings, as I walked to my car, to go to work.
Anywho, fast forward to last night…when I got home from work, I wanted to go for a walk, since the weather was SO nice. I took Layla on the leash & my mom pushed my 15 month old in the stroller. Near the end of our walk, we were getting back to the cul-de-sac & out of nowhere, 2 dogs came running straight at Layla and stopped. Layla growled & bowed her back to & tried getting behind me some. I think it was because she has always been scared of those dogs & she knew what had happened to her last week. Well, the instigating dog came charging at Layla & myself…going straight for her back side. The other 2 followed & teamed up on all sides of her. I was right in the middle & saw everything happening…hearing my sweet Layla, yelping & crying. I was screaming bloody murder, yelling “Get off of her! Get off of her!” over and over and over…as if that was going to do anything. I felt so helpless!! The neighbors & their daughter were trying so hard to break the dogs up, but no success! Thank God my mom had my daughter…she turned the stroller away & shielded her with her body, praying she wouldn’t get attacked.
Layla tried to retreat back to the house, to get in the basement, but these dogs wouldn’t let up on her. When I finally got around back to her, I was shocked to see she wasn’t torn to shreds, based on her cries & yelping. She did have a pretty deep & long gash, on her back – right at her tail though & she was whimpering a lot. There were some other bites on her, but nothing overly serious, like the gash. Layla is so sweet & loving, she did NOT deserve that at all! Of course I was livid! The neighbor’s daughter was all to pieces upset, crying & trying to hug and comfort Layla. The instigating dog did come around back & she was cowering down…I think she knew she had done wrong?!
I rushed to to the ER Vet about 30 minutes away. Almost $300 later, Layla ended up getting stitches, antibiotics, & pain pills. Being the animal lover I am though, I checked on my neighbors, because the dad said he was getting rid of the dog tomorrow…and I know the daughter was upset, plus I do feel the dog knew she did wrong. (He also offered to pay for any vet bills.) I found out that they all got to say their goodbyes to her, the dad took her to Dairy Queen to get fries & a milkshake for them to share, then out to the farm….where she crossed the Rainbow Bridge! They typically would never do something like that, as they believe in humane ways of doing things of the sort, but said it was for the best, as her aggression & protectiveness was getting worst.
As angry & as upset as I am, especially considering we were all at risk – especially my daughter, I’m heartbroken. I love animals so much, so it breaks my heart when one passes, regardless of the circumstances. They are like family, so when you lose one of them, it hurts so bad. My heart literally ACHESSSS thinking of what the dad had to do…I can’t imagine how hard that must have been. I know they are all hurting & heartbroken today & I am too, not only for my dog, but for them as well!
