I have 2 cats. I love them both dearly, but one of them has always been my special little guy. I adopted him 4 years ago, during a very difficult time in my life. We have always had this special bond that people commented on. We sleep together every night, he is always next to me when I’m up and about – he even RUNS to the door when I’m home and won’t stop meowing until I snuggle him. He LOVES people and is just the friendly, most laid-back cat ever. I could go on and on about what an amazing cat he is. He is part of our family. He is also VERY close to our little girl kitty.
I moved in with my SO about 3 months ago. He has a dog and used to leave the back door open so the dog could come in and out as he pleased. When I moved in, I explained MULTIPLE times that my cats are indoor cats and the door could not be left open.
Last night, I came into the living room and he was watching tv with the door open. He wasn’t paying attention at ALL and the younger female kitty, Molly, was about to dash out the door. I grabbed her and shut the door and explained to my SO that he NEEDS to shut the door. I then fed both the cats and went to bed.
Lo and behold, I woke up this morning and Milo, my baby, was not in my bed. This is very unusual. I got up to look for him and he was nowhere – but the back door was wide open.
That was around 9am this morning. It is now almost 6pm and he is nowhere to be found. I’ve turned the house upside down. I’ve scavenged the neighborhood. I’ve had friends and family over to help in the search. I’ve hung fliers. I put food in the front and back. I’ve looked in every tiny hiding spot near the house that I could think of. I even put some of his used litter outside with the hope that he would smell it and come back. I even called a Pet Amber Alert company and paid them to call 250 of my neighbors with the alert. I feel like a crazy person, but I’m desperate.
Bees, I just need some good vibes and prayers. I love this animal and the thought of him being out and alone breaks my heart. I can’t stop sobbing 🙁
And yes, I’m pissed at my SO. I blame him for this. He never takes my worries seriously and now that has possibly lost me my kitty forever. I know I’ll forgive him and that this was not his intent, but I am still livid at this point :/
Ugh, Bees… so so sad 🙁

@MsMonkey: omg, this is terrible. i am sending you wishes that he will return safely back to you.
you said that you just recently moved. i do know that cats will often go back to their former homes. it may be worth checking out and broaden your search. that may only be for outdoor cats though.
good luck and please keep us updated.

Oh no! Cats are notorious for extended exploratory romps though, so don’t panic yet. Once they get outside they think “Hey, might as well sunbathe/hunt/climb a tree” but they have an uncanny knack for showing up at 3am starving and tired. Keep calling, shake bags of treats, put in a call to all the local shelters and animal control as well in case some good Samaritan turns him in.
And yes, your SO absolutely owes you a major apology.

@mypinkshoes: He was never outside while in our old home, but it’s worth a shot. Although it’s quite far and seperated mostly by highways and big city, so the trek there would be dangerous and confusing for a kitty.
He’s only gotten out once in his life. It was about 2 years ago, during a snowstorm. He slipped past me when I opened the door for the pizza guy. About three hours later, I heard meowing. He was sitting at the front door, covered in snow. I don’t think he even moved. Ever since then, he wouldn’t even TRY to go outside, which is why this is so weird.

@KatyElle: I hope so. We’ve put his favorite blanket and some used litter outside with the hope it will remind him where his home is. I’ve called every shelter and animal control office, but I will certainly be calling again tomorrow.
My SO feels badly and he’s apologized, but it’s just going to take me time to stop being angry. I just keep looking at him and thinking, “If you’d LISTENED to me, I wouldn’t be going through this.”
Huge picture, whoops, but this is from yesterday. He’s such a love.

Oh, I’m SO sorry 🙁 That’s awful (and I would be beyond mad at my SO if this happened). I really hope your little guy comes soon asap. Definitely sometimes when they get out, they wander around for hours and hours – some of my parents’ cats have gotten out before and stayed out all day and night, but came home after a day or two. Try to think positive!

Thanks for all your kind thoughts, everyone! I am just sitting here hoping beyond all hope. I just put his cat tree outside, which probably looks ridiculous, but I could care less.

Is your little guy microchipped? If not, WHEN he comes back (because I really think he will!), you should definitely get him chipped for just such an accident as this.
don’t worry too much ok… kitties are really really good at finding their way home (for food usually!) (((HUGS))) Just keep looking for him, calling him, leaving food out, and passing the word along!
