I’m in cycle 3 coming off the pill. My first cycle was 30 days, my second was 38 days. During my second cycle, I used the clear blue easy digital ovulation monitor – the one with the smiley face to detect the LH surge. I got my smiley face at cycle day 12 – so ovulate around day 14. This means that my luteal phase was 24 days long, since I didnt get my period until CD 38! Now, im my third cycle, again I got the smiley at CD 12 and I’m on CD 32 and counting!
Is this even possible, and should I be worried? One of three things has to have happened. Either the test is wrong (although it’s supposed to be like 98% accurate and what a coincidence I got the smiley on the same day both times), or the test is right but I didnt ovulate (I have read it’s very rare to get the LH surge and not ovulate), or else I have a 24 day Luteal Phase.
Anyone have any idea?! Appreciate it:)

Not sure what’s going on but wanted to point out that it is NOT very rare to get an LH surge and not ovulate. It is very common to not ovulate each month; you have to have enough hormones and your follicles have to be a certain size to actually burst and drop the egg. While TTC I had a positive OPK every month but after lab work it showed in fact I was not ovulating.

@MissGreen: Thanks for letting me know. Althought I would be really bummed if I am not ovulating because we want to start trying this month. Perhaps I need to start temping also.
Also, wondering what you did once you found out?

Are you charting your BBT? The only way to tell if you actually ovulated and when is to track your temperature. It is actually quite COMMON to get an LH surge and then not O.

ditto what septcabride said – you might want to try charting your bbt too. i never had much luck with opk’s alone since they measure a surge in hormones BEFORE you actually ovulate, so you never know what actually happened — i never got a positive but was definitely ovulating cause i’m pregnant now. i wouldn’t worry too much. good luck!

Yea charting your temps would be best; I could never do it bc I work night shift and have weird sleep schedules so my OB said it would be pointless since they would be so inaccurate. Once we found out I wasn’t I was placed on medications to stimulate ovulation and it worked but we had so many other roadblocks ahead that it didn’t work for us. You could still just be adjusting to coming off BC. I wouldn’t think into it too much and temp and see what that tells you. Good luck!

Just to comment on the luteal phase part. It extremely unlikely that your luteal phase is that long. 14 is average, but the range around that it pretty small, 2-3 days at most.
Temping will definitely help you figure out what’s going on. I’m on my 10th cycle off BC and nothing has become regular…

Did you take a pregnancy test during your 24 day “luteal phase”? The reason I ask is I’m wondering if you could have had a chemical pregnancy i.e. a very early miscarriage. That could be responsible for your symptoms — ovulating on time but late period.
