Here’s the situation: my mom has offered to pay for the meal at our wedding. Our wedding is taking place at an overnight summer camp, and that afforded us the luxury to bring in whomever we wanted to cater. Well, my mom hasn’t been overly involved in the planning process (she came dress shopping with me and I share some details here and there), so she definitely expected me to do the legwork on finding the caterer. With that said, I know my mom doesn’t have a ton of extra money so I wanted to find the most affordable caterer possible that could provide a nice meal. After hunting around for a few months, a friend suggested the man who runs the catering out of her church. At first, I was very reluctant because I had a bad impression of church catering…. But I agreed to meet with him. He seemed great! He was willing to provide any menu I wanted, and could provide all of the rentals as well (plates, cutlery etc…).This is the menu we decided upon (it is a buffet).
Spinach Salad with sliced strawberries and toasted almonds
Orzo salad with heirloom tomatoes, green onion ad feta
Brown buttered carrots
Fresh green beans with garlic and crispy bacon
Oven roasted new potatoes
Roast Beef carving station with au jus
Georgia chicken with sweet peach sauce
The menu sounded great to me, especially for our laidback, rustic wedding and the price was $21.50 per person including the rentals and tax. That was nearly half of what the other caterers in town were charging me for something similar.
Well, my mom insisted that we taste his beef. So, I arranged for him to cook a smaller beef for my and fiancés family. I thought it was very tasty. Granted, it was well done and we typically eat our beef medium, but it was very good. Everyone at the table seemed to agree.
Turns out, my mom did not agree and now I hear that she has been telling everyone in my family and even my friends that she doesn’t care for the caterer,,, don’t expect much from the food… it wouldn’t be her choice…the thing is that it is HER choice since she is paying. I brought this up with her and she doesn’t want to look at the more expensive caterers, but continues to say negative things about the one we can afford. What should I do??
