My “something barrowed” was supposed to be my mothers pearl bracelets. Well, I went home this past weekend for my Bridal shower where my mom gave me the bracelets. She didn’t want to mail them for fear of them getting lost.
So I packed them in my suitcase as I was not able to have a carry-on bag and upon arriving to baggage claim, my suitcase was unzipped and the pearls were missing! They were the ONLY items missing =( I seriously just started BAWLING in the middle of the airport. I called my mom right away and she was so sweet to me. I think she knew how devastated I was and tried to make me feel better. I had a mixture of anger and guilt. I was so mad at myself that I didn’t just carry them on in my purse. I honestly thought they were safer in my luggage where I check it in, then pick it up. There is no risk of carrying it around the airport, leaving it somewhere..etc.
In the grand scheme of things, it will all be ok, but it just really sucks that people can be SO bad sometimes.

oh no! so sorry to hear that! What a horrible way to have them stolen, too! I cannot believe the lack of a conscience that some people have…
My grandma’s house was broken into, years ago, and they took all of her jewelry. (Apparently there was a fair bit of it, and I would have inherited some of it.)

That his horrible! I am so sorry.

@terryal87: That aweful, I’m so sorry to hear that.
If you haven’t already, file a report with the police and alert the airline.

(( HUGS )) this is truly a sad sad story (for you and your mom)
I am very very sorry for your loss
Personally, I don’t trust my checked bags at all when I drop em off at the Airport Check-In … as over the years they’ve been lost sooo many times.
I honestly always have a back up plan for “What IF I NEVER see them again”
So ya, I don’t ever put anything of value in a checked suitcase
As recommended, I carry ALL MY VALUABLES on me in my purse / carry on.

That is awful. People are insane these days.

I am so sorry. It is insane how people can steal things so easily. I assume the airline has some sort of fine print protecting their theiving employees, but you should try to file a complaint anyway.

I reported it immediatly to the desk agent at the baggage claim and was handed a ticket for “lost and found”. I don’t think she wanted to admit that it was stolen. I did file a form with the “lost and found” which I did explain that I seriously doubt it’s “lost”. I also posted a complaint on their FB wall. I was pretty level headed about it, not going off on a rant. Based off of their FB page, they seem to be pretty responsive to customer complaints/compliments. I tried to find a complaint tab on their website but havne’t been able to find it. There’s really nothing that can be done now, but hopefully they’ll at least hear my experience and pay closer attention. It really does suck, a lot actually, but hey, I’m getting married in 53 days, pearls or NO pearls =)
Thanks for all your comments.

Probably stolen by TSA workers. There are so many reports of that lately. It could be baggage handlers, but I tend to think it would be TSA because when they are x-raying the baggage for security they can see valuables. Some random baggage person isn’t as likely to dig through an unknown bag for unknown stuff. Someone looking with an X-ray knows just where the stuff is and probably what it is (jewelry) and can grab it easily.
Check out this facebook where people submit their experiences with TSA – tons of people reporting things stolen and nothing is ever done about it!
So sorry to hear about this.

Yeah, never put anything in your checked luggage that’s valuable or irreplaceable. Aside from the possibility of items being stolen, your bag could be lost. My sister once had a suitcase go missing for several months when she was returning home from an international trip. They eventually returned it to her, but she had already given up hope.
I’m sorry to hear that your pearls have gone missing. 🙁 That’s terrible.

You might start checking the local pawnshops. The person who stole them is probably not going to keep them and wear them – chances are they want to turn them around for cash.

Have you filed a police report? The airline needs to know that this is not acceptable, and the police need to start investigating. Once they show up, you’ll start getting answers… more likely to get answers that way than by posting on facebook, anyway!

@terryal87: alert the airline immediately. it may not be their fault as baggage handlers dont do much looking, but i walk thru the bagroom here everyday and see tsa going thru people’s stuff after its scanned. the airline will investigate to make sure they are not at fault. those rooms are on camera. if it’s tsa, i would fight hard.
also, involve the police. if you really want to light a fire you could always alert local media.

@terryal87: eugh, stuff like this makes me SO angry. That there are worthless people who just take other peoples treasured belongings
but i agree 100% call airline, police, put the infortmation out there (social media etc). I doubt theyd look at the cameras if you didnt make a fuss

I just read through all the comments on that facebook page…eye opening and scary.
