Have you checked other stores? You could probably find the designer online somewhere and at least get a dress that will work with her pregnant belly in the same designer/colour?

Check out the online listings too, maybe someone is selling?  (If you are desperate, maybe ask whether the store has records of the people who have bought that same dress – maybe they will contact them for you on a slow day?  I imagine for privacy reasons they won’t give out that information to you.)  Try calling the designer, maybe they have some old ones kicking around in the right color?

It’s tough though, because it’s your sister-in-law’s pregnancy that’s making the cost go up, which has nothing to do with your sister.  If it were a friend I’d say definitely offer to pay.  Since it’s your SIL (your brother, I assume and your new niece/nephew), thus related to you & your sister, it seems that your mom would be more understanding.  To keep the peace, maybe offer to buy the old $50 dress?

And on a side note, I would be totally excited if my sister couldn’t fit into her dress…she’s been trying to get pregnant for years.  🙂  (I realize you weren’t complaining about your SIL, this is a 100% side digression!)

@megcomb: What color and what size does she need? And length? Some Bees are dang good detectives! We might be able to find something for you!

I would have you pregnant Bridesmaid or Best Man wear a similar color, and style dress. I would also wait to buy until a month or two before the wedding. It is up to you but you never know ho big someone might get.

@megcomb: Gotcha.  I refer to my FI’s sister as Future Sister-In-Law, so I got confused there.

Have the SIL take the dress to a seamstress/alterer depending on the style she could have a corset back put in, corset backs allow for a LOT of fudging in sizes. Trust me! A friend had a similar issue come up at her wedding, the Bridesmaid or Best Man just had a corset back put in and it all worked out.

I would check the David’s Bridal website. You may not be able to find the exact dress, but you might be able to find another style of dress in the same color. They have an outlet section, and I’m thinking they put the discontinued styles and colors in there. It’s worth a look!

See if the store will let you order the same fabric that the dress is made of, and then take it to a seamstress to figure out what can be done, even if that means that your Future Sister-In-Law is wearing a slightly different dress than the rest. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding where the Maid/Matron of Honor (bride’s sister) was also eight months on the day. They went with a skirt in the same fabric as our two piece, but then a seamstress friend made an empire waist top in the same neckline to go over the giant bebbeh belly. Not only did we still look uniform then, the Maid/Matron of Honor looked adorable.

Can you post a pic of your bridesmaid dress so that sewing Bees can see what you’re working with?

Also, let me just say, thank you for your super-graceful attitude about the whole thing. Yay for being an aunt!

I think if you are going to change the look (which I don’t think is unreasonable) you need to reimburse them each $50 for the cost of the first dress.

Everytime I’m a bridesmaid, I re-sell my dress on craigslist.  Do a google search for the style or color and see if anything turns up used!
