Oh no!  I was going to suggest a “hot water bottle” (one of the red flexible rubber things) but it sounds like you are using heat.  I am sorry bakerella- I would take ibuprofen, use heat, and try to relax.  Go for a walk or something else you love.  Hope you feel better!

My neck tenses up from stress as well, and I love putting on icyhot before bed (or anytime I’m at home and don’t plan to go out on the town smelling like wintergreen). For real, lets me relax and fall right to sleep. I hope you feel better!!

My neck gets all spazzy when I’m stressed too. Ibuprofen usually helps, and I’ve used Icy Hot in the past – it just distracts you from the pain, which is always helpful 🙂

That being said, I also vote for massage (and yes I’m biased since I’m a massage therapist)!!

Drink lots of water. It sounds crazy but alot of neck pain can be from dehydration on top of stress, sleeping funny etc. It actually works!

If you have a bathroom with a tub and enough room to lay near it–rest your neck on the side of the tub and let your weight rest on it. Maybe rock back and forth a little. That should help. I was having horrible tension headaches when the school health center nurse recommended that to me.

ICE! I always forget this and always go for the heat because it feels better, but you need to reduce the swelling first, then heat to relax the muscles. Lots of water too, helps keep your muscles more fluid, and of course, anti-inflamatories. And get that SO of yours to knead some of that out.

I have the same problem, but I think it was caused by a bit too much hair whipping during my zumba class….
One thing that has helped a lot over the past couple of days was switching to a thinner pillow. I usually use a thick foam pillow, but my Fiance suggested I use his flat feather pillow, and I felt way better the next morning. I guess it puts less stress on your neck.
