- Wedding: August 2012
In a moment of bridal overenthusiasm last winter, I decided that FH’s and my formal summer wedding should have a “1920’s British garden party” feel. This led me to spend the next six months trolling the internet for Art Deco bridal shizz. Results were mixed.
Bridesmaid dresses along those lines were especially difficult to find. I wanted my maids to be able to choose what they wore, but I also wanted them all in the same color and looking kind of like the Chrysler Building (in a sexy way!). Of course, they all had different finances and body shapes too.
I didn’t think any of this was going to be possible. But it was! It so totally was, thanks to Sue Wong cocktail dresses. I found one on sale at Bloomingdale’s, and ever since then, I have been gallivanting around with fistfuls of them in a land of gumdrops and unicorns. (I don’t work for Sue Wong, I promise.)
The good things about her cocktail range:
1. there are lots and lots of different designs, but she only works in 3 or 4 colors. All I had to do was tell my maids to look for one of her gray dresses, and then they picked out whatever design they wanted.
2. they are on sale ALL the time. ALL! Don’t let the full prices at Saks and Nieman’s scare you. Through a combination of eBay, Bluefly, and department store sales, I was able to help 6 of my 7 maids get dresses between $80 and $220. (Most of them paid about $180.) My sister/MOH sprang for a full-price dress, but because FH and I registered at Bloomie’s, I was able to give her an insane coupon that shaved $250 off the price.
…Wedding is just 3 weeks and change away, and I can’t WAIT to see how this all looks. Here’s a board I created. These are the exact dresses my maids are wearing–long black dress is my groom’s “best person.” Am not sure what the exact tux is going to look like, but it’s going to be pretty close to the below.
I had a blast finding suitable art deco accessories for my maids. Julie Nolan from Etsy designed the earrings–how amazing are they?! Got those for everyone and a diamond ring similar to the below for my Maid/Matron of Honor.
Decor will be lots of spiral topiaries/ivy/moss/candles on tall silver candlesticks. Wheeee!
Thank you for letting me impose my glee on you…
