- Wedding: August 2012 - Sunset Harbour
We were at our venue to make final menu selections and give a final payment – my parents joined us as they have a working relationship with the venue owners.
We were going over the menu when the owner noted on our contract that we were getting a raw bar, I corrected him that we had changed that due to the cost….and my parents said that they were taking care of it. I was shocked, jaw dropped and told them it wasn’t needed, to save their money, but they shrugged it off and we went on with our meeting….
When it came time for us to write the BIG check, both my parents looked at us and smiled, announcing that THEY were covering the entire thing. The money Fiance and I had been saving up is to be used as a nest egg for buying a house.
I don’t think I will ever be able to recall this without crying – like I am doing now. I was hysterical, Fiance sat there in stunned silence, and the venue owner was cracking up over my melt down reaction and patting my head.
This was never ever ever something I thought would happen, but apparently they have been working on this since we got engaged and they have kept us in the dark as a surprise.
We knew that they have sacraficed alot to help with what they can, and even called off a planned vacation – so Fiance and I had already booked them on a cruise as a gift to say thank you for everything (this was done before we knew about them footing the entire bill!!!)
I would like to do something other than putting the confirmation papers in a card – I was thinking making up t-shirts or something, but I can’t think of something funny to put on them. I was thinking of something along the lines of ‘Recovering From Daughters Wedding’ or ‘On Our Daughters Tab’, something like that…..ideas?

Why would they do that to you? LOL
So excited for you, now you get a wedding and a “house” when the time is right! Wow.

I really am still in complete shock over it, and I just want to bow down at my parents feet for doing something this big for us. We were fully prepaired to pay for the whole thing since we have been saving like crazy – but I am sooooo greatful to be able to now put that money toward a house. It’s getting rolled right into a CD to collect interest until we are ready.

How nice! And that’s really generous of you to send them on a cruise. My parents wouldn’t wear t shirts, but if yours would, those are cute ideas.
ETA – I like “recovering” better. It would be a good conversation starter, whereas people might feel uncomfortable asking why their daughter paid for their cruise.

The cruise s a wonderful idea. Maybe book them a couple of excursions as well? Or a spa day?

Aw how wonderfully sweet of them! So touching, it brings a tear to my eyes and I don’t even know you! I love when people do things for other people like that. I think it’s also great that you already booked them a cruise.
Instead of a t-shirt, perhaps you can book them massages or an excursion? It might be a bit more money.
I wouldn’t do “on our daughter’s tab” though – that’s kinda.. showy? I don’t know if that’s the word, but seems like you’re gloating that you paid for it. I’m sure that’s not your intention, but that’s just how it comes off to me.

I would get some cruise related gifts- travel toliletries, a photo album for when they get back, brochures for the different places the cruise stops etc. I would wrap each item separetly, and put the confirmation papers in a shirt box and wrap that as well. I would have them open the confirmation papers last.

Congratulations! What a relief! My parents just told me last week that they are giving Fiance and I 10k – our budget is 15k, so that’s a HUGE help. I was SHOCKED and couldn’t stop crying, so I know exactly how you feel. It feels a little bit like what winning the lottery would feel like, I think.
