Yesterday, after I got home from work, I took Basil for a nice long walk.
We live on the 3rd and 4th floors of our building and he was fine getting up the stairs when we got home. He ran up to the bedroom while I put away his leash. A minute later, he came back down the stairs, limping on his front leg. Badly.
Something must have happened in the 30 seconds he was upstairs. At first, I didn’t think it was that big a deal. I thought that maybe he stumbled on the steips (he’s clumsy and tends to do that often) and that he’d be okay in an hour or so if he stayed off of it. But the night went on and he still was limping very badly.
I hoped that this morning, after he slept and stayed off of it all night, he’d be better, but he’s not.
It looks like it’s his paw rather than his leg. I’ve checked it a dozen times to see if there’s anything stuck in there or if one of his nails split, but it looks fine.
And here’s the biggest problem: the boy is away for the weekend and he took our car. That’ wouldn’t normally be a problem because we live in the city and I can take public transportation or walk anywhere. But I can’t bring Basil to the vet because I can’t walk him and I can’t bring him on the bus.
Plus, our vet is closed on the weekends anyway. If I took him in, it would have to be to the emergency vet, who would charge $500 just to look at him, and then they’ll probably just tell me to keep him off of it, which I’m doing anyway.
I guess I’ll just keep him off of it until Monday – by the afternoon, the boy will be home with the car and he can take Baz to the vet if he’s still limping. Honestly, besides the limping, he seems fine. He’s wagging his tail, giving kisses, gnawing on his toys, and is in generally good spirits.
I just hate feeling so helpless.
