I remember being anxious reading about all the scary birth stories posted on here, so I wanted to share my experience for those interested in a good birth story for a change. Overall, I was very pleased with my experience and how it all went down. I didnt have much of a “birth plan” except I knew I would get an epidural, and also I hired a doula just to be on the safe side.
My water broke at 1pm. It was a sudden big gush while I was just lying in bed not doing much. I called triage at the hospital and they told me to come in to get checked out, I didn’t have any contractions yet, zero, so they sent me on my way told me to come back at 1am at the latest because they want me to deliver within the 24 hr window of water breaking. I knew they were going to send me back, so in retrospect I should have waited at home longer… Nonetheless since its about 40 mins drive back home, we decided to stay nearby and go out and grab a bite. I finally started to have some contractions at 10pm, but they were very mild and irregular. We came back and I was checked again at 2am and was at 3cm and 80% effaced, still feeling pretty good. I was admitted at that point and was with my mom and doula, I sent my husband home to sleep since there was still a lot of time till pushing.
At 6am I was checked again and was already at 6cm and contractions were getting pretty painful but were irregular and not as strong as the Dr wanted so they started low dose pitocin and also an epidural at the same time (which I requested). The epidural did its magic and I felt great. I could still feel my legs and could move around, except the pain was gone. They had to increase my pitocin a bit a few times but I responded really well to it and by 9am I was at 10cm! The final pitocin dose was at 8 I believe (they started at 2). Since baby’s head was not fully down yet, we waited a bit for that to happen before pushing. At some point I had a reaction to the drugs and was shivering quite bad and running a small fever, that was actually the worst part of the whole experience… not being able to stop the shaking, but they put warm blankets on me and that helped.
By now it was almost pushing time but my husband was stuck in traffic because it was morning rush hour (downtown hospital) and I was worried he would miss it… fortunately he made it after all and by 10:20am I felt pressure to push. After only half an hour of pushing, baby made his arrival, all 8lb15oz (4.0 kg). I remember joking around and being in a good mood during the pushing stage, again – thank god for the epidural! I only had one small tear which was stitched up nicely (my mom who is a nurse told me so because she watched the whole thing… ew… I know).
Overall I am very pleased with they way things went. We lucked out with an amazing doc and nurse and they did a great job making sure I don’t tear and getting him out safely. I am now 3 weeks post partum and me and baby are both doing great! Looking back, I wish I wasnt so nervous about the whole thing, because overall it wasn’t bad at all and I would do it all over again. I wish I read more good birth stories on WB so hopefully my story helps someone.
