(Sorry it’s kind of long) I wanted to include the details for an upcoming anniversary note to my fiance which I just wrote for him.
On the afternoon of Saturday, February 18, 2012, I waited, excitedly, but not in the least bit patiently, for my boyfriend to arrive. We had planned for this special day, a culmination of all of our love for each other. He would wear his black pin striped suit with a red shirt and patterned black tie, and I would wear a red dress. Since we knew our engagement would take place in February, we found it fitting to wear red, the colour of love. As we drove into the city, we tried to keep the conversation as casual as possible. We held hands as we always do. I looked over at him, and he looked over at me, and we smiled at each other often. When we arrived at the hotel, we found a beautiful room with a sparkling fireplace. As always, my boyfriend knows how to spoil me.
After taking pictures, we made our way to the dining room for our 5:00 reservation. The dining room is a dual level circular restaurant located on the harbour. When we arrived, the hostess seated us, and we were met by another waitress who showed us to our table. I soon understood why. Our table was located in a quiet, secluded area where we could enjoy each other’s company while overlooking the view of the Yacht Club. This was the perfect way to begin our evening.
Throughout dinner we talked, smiled at each other, and laughed, and were both quite calm and composed. We started with a basket of bread holding multiple breads including olive, sour dough, French, and cranberry. Together with our bread, we enjoyed a piece of aged cheese glazed with apricot marmalade. Our appetizer was scallops, with diced bacon, sundried tomatoes, and leeks. For his entrée, he chose the rack of lamb which was honey and pecan crusted, and served with vegetables as well as a potato soufflé. I chose the chicken supreme which was a tender chicken breast served with vegetables and several chive dumplings. After a delicious meal served by professional staff and executed with care, we were encouraged to choose dessert. He chose a chocolate peanut butter tower which was a chocolate mousse-like pastry served with chocolate peanut butter ice cream. I chose a cranberry walnut tart served with ginger ice cream. Soon after I ordered my dessert, I noticed my boyfriend glancing over at the kitchen door, and reaching into his right pocket, which I later learned housed only a camera lens! At that moment, my heart began to beat, but I wasn’t sure what would happen next, so I ate my dessert as calmly as I could, making sure to chew every bite carefully.
As our plates were cleared, I sensed the moment was near. My boyfriend began to smile at me, the same beautiful smile that I felt in love with. I took a deep breath and listened attentively. My boyfriend began to speak. He said, “Thank you for coming into my life. I want to have a happy future for you. I have something for you.” At that moment I began to cry, but I was so excited that I was feeling several different emotions at once. I remember continually repeating, “Oh my God! Oh my God!”, but trying not to make a scene. I do not remember seeing my boyfriend kneeling on the floor; I only remember seeing a halo of shine when he opened the box that held the ring. I was blinded by the sparkle of the ring. My boyfriend asked, “Victoria, will you marry me?” I quickly responded, “Yes!” Due to all of this excitement, I failed to extend my hand, so instead, my boyfriend reached for it, and slid the ring onto my finger. We shared a kiss, and soon after, a long hug. Someone in the restaurant whispered, “They just got engaged!”, but I couldn’t focus on that because I was too comfortable being embraced in the arms of my fiancé. It was our moment. And I will never forget it.
