Hi hi! I’m a newb here but I wanted to share my engagement story because……I just really like sharing it lol. It happened a couple months ago but I swear it feels like yesterday.
So bit of background, he is 25 and at the time of the proposal I was 23. It happened 2 days before my 24th birthday 🙂 He had just bought us my dream house 3 months prior to his proposal, so I had assumed money was low and definitely wasn’t expecting it. Now my Fiance SUCKS at surprises and is a terrible liar. Every Christmas I always know exactly what he is giving me and overall he breaks halfway through a false story. It’s an endearing quality, but I always told him I would know when he’d propose. BOY did he prove me wrong. Even with the house — we were going in person to look at a few and when we walked through my favorite one (I had seen it online) I told him that I thought it was the one but it was too expensive. At that moment, he said “well I’m glad you like it because I already signed the paperwork for it”. So off the rip, I realized he’d gotten good at surprising me with big things and I definitely was in tears lol.
So to begin, it all started about two weeks before my birthday. One of my coworkers (M) is also a best friend outside of work and his gf (K) has been a best friend since highschool. M told me that K wanted to do a girls thing with me the weekend right before my birthday because my birthday was on a Monday. He said she would pay and everything. I texted K about it and she told me to keep that evening open and that it was a surprise. She would tell me the day of where to go. I asked my then bf if he had anything planned that evening for me since it was my birthday before I confirmed with K. He said I could go and that he would just reschedule, but seemed a little sad. But because he said yes I went ahead and scheduled with K.
On that Saturday, mother nature decided to strike and my period came. First days of period are always awful for me — the cramps are debilitating. My bf was freaking out more than usual and literally went to the store six different times to buy tea, tampins, pads, midol, heating pads, etc and was waiting on me hand and foot. Normally he isn’t quite as doting (which is fine because I like being alone in those times of pain) but he seemed very very invested in me feeling better. He said he just really wanted me to be feeling well enough to go meet K and didn’t want me to miss out. Eventually, everything kicked in and I was fine. K texted me and told me to meet her at the W hotel in the city around 8. He told me since money was tight he was going to cook me a super amazing surprise birthday dinner while I was out (he doesn’t really cook so I was very happy). I went ahead and kissed my bf and left to meet her. At the hotel, she was waiting for me in the lobby and told me she was taking me to the spa there to get our nails done! So we went to the spa and it was only us two plus the manager and a nail tech. As she did our nails, they brought out hors d’oeuvres and the manager brought out some champagne on ice, saying “your bf told me to tell you ladies to have fun”. K looked super shocked and as did I, since my bf wasn’t supposed to know what we were doing. K told me that M must have told my bf and ruined the surprise. As the nail tech was doing my nails, I told her to do the accent nail on my pointer finger as I don’t really wear rings. The nail tech said “well certain rings can look good though” and I agreed but asked her to do my pointer finger anyway. However, as she was doing my nails I was turned talking to K the whole time and when she finished she said “Oops I accidentally did the ring finger” and had painted my ring finger on my left hand a sparkly gold. It wasn’t a big deal and it looked nice so I told her it was fine. We then wrapped up, K talked to the manager in a separate room, and he led us out through the back of the spa (which I thought was a little weird).
I headed home and gave my bf a call when I was on my way. Me, being the person I am, was blasting Beyonce songs as I pulled into the garage and was singing as I walked into the house. Mood was totally shifted because there were blue lights on, it was dim, and there were flower petals and paper lanterns all over the floor with glow sticks saying ‘I love you’ spelled out. Soft music was playing from one of the lightbulbs and then a message came through. It was my bf’s voice saying just how much he loved me and how I had the key to his heart. The message led me to a key on the floor (the key to the house) encircled in flower petals. This was a big deal for me, because while we were in the process of moving in, we had been going through ongoing arguments because he had refused to give me a key to the house yet. Kept saying he “wanted to do it right”. So after I picked up the key the message advised me to go up the stairs to an amazing meal. So I followed the glowsticks up the stairs and there he was in the kitchen with plates laid out. Instead of cooking, somehow he had gotten my favorite food from my favorite restaurant ever and set it up. While we ate together, I talked about how amazing my birthday has been and even said “it was so funny, I saw the key to the house and I swear I thought it was a proposal happening!” He just laughed it off and said “nah not right now”.
After we ate, he said he wanted to take me out somewhere and that he had a surprise for me. So we walked up the second set of stairs (we live in a townhome so there are a lot of levels) and the stairs were lined with more glowsticks and an arrow at the top of the stairs pointing to the bedroom. On the bed, there was a beautiful backless black dress laid out and in the bathroom the tub was lined with candles. I told him that I would get dressed and I appreciated the bath, but if I took a full bath I would be too sleepy to go out lol. Please note, at this point I STILL thought this was all for my birthday. He said that was fine, and asked me to change while he went and got something from the car. I put on the dress and was finishing up when he came back inside and put a blazer on. We were about to leave the house when he asked if I wanted to go outside to our sky terrace (super high balcony). We hadn’t been out there in a while so I said okay. Next set of stairs up with even more glowsticks and we reached the top level. On the terrace there were lanterns and candles, and somehow he had set up a speaker to play our song. I kinda knew at this point, because there were our initials written out with glowsticks on the terrace floor, but it still seemed a bit unbelievable. We went outside and he accidentally knocked a glowstick off of the railing. We were talking and a few moments later large clear balloons rose up from nowhere and floated to the sky from beyond our balcony. Then, he went into his speech and got on one knee and popped the question. Of course I said yes, cried a bunch and our parents were below cheering. Phew!!! The end!! Sorry for the length
- obviously he was so attentive because that was proposal night
- He was the one who set up the spa visit
- apparently the spa was actually closed so the nail tech and manager knew about the proposal
- they dont serve food or complimentary champagne
- the manager messed up because he wasnt supposed to mention his name
- I didn’t know my favorite restaurant does not do takeout, it was a special exception
- he didn’t get something out of the car, he went to go grab our parents from hiding and to set up balloons
- him knocking over the glowstick was a signal to our parents to let the balloons go
- Apparently everyone knew for months
- he wanted fireworks but the county commissioner said it was too much of a hazard
