Hey ladies-
My 5 month old pup has had a weird cough for a little less than a week now. He has his bordatella (is that how you spell it?) vaccine up to date, but I’m still a little concerned. He just sounds stuffed up, snarfeley, and every once in awhile has a cough that sounds like he’s gunna puke. He doesn’t have a runny nose or any other gross excrements. Fiance thinks he started to notice it right when we changed his food over. He is still himself, no personality changes or appetite changes.
Can changing food cause a cold? Can dogs still get kennel cough with a vaccine? What do you do when your pup gets sick?

he could have alergies to the food. My dog has pretty bad food alergies.
Just call your vet and see what they say.

How often is your puppy coughing? My toy poodle coughs like that a few times a day, but I’ve brought him to the vet multiple times and nothing is wrong with him. He just coughs a few times a day. I’m actually dogsitting my friend’s toy poodle at the moment, and her dog does the same thing. Since it’s something new, I would bring him to the vet just to check it out, but don’t worry too much about it.

I’d call the vet and see what they say but our dog has serious summer allergies and they have been especially bad the last few weeks. When he’ll lick himself after being outside he’ll get all the allergens and then he’ll cough. Maybe try to wipe your pup down (paws too) after going outside and see if anything improves.

No vaccine is 100%. And there are many of strains of kennel cough out there, I think around 40-50, and the vaccine usually only covers about 10-15.
Or it could be allergies.
Or it could be reverse sneezing, which is common and harmless. Here’s a video of what reverse sneezing sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HXcMLokADc
If you’re worried, take him to the vet. Better safe than sorry, and it will ease your mind.

Is he up to date on his heartworm medicine as well? Coughing like that can be a symptom of heartworms and can be very dangerous.

I dont want to scare you but it could more than a cough. My dog only had a cough and I let it go and she had pnemonia. Please take your puppy to the vet. Better to be safe than sorry.

My dogs’ shots were up to date but they still got kennel cough after a visit to a dog park. Has your pup been around other dogs lately? As others said, call your vet. Our vet put our dogs on an antibiotic to get rid of the kennel cough, but they had to go by how we described it because they didn’t cough while we were at the appt. So if you can record it, it might be easier for your vet to figure out what’s going on.

@caszos: Yes he is up to date on his heart worm medication. We are very diligent about that. Heartworm scares me!
As suggested we called our vet and made an appointment to take him in Tuesday. The vet didn’t seem too concerned so that was good. I will let you know what they say. Thanks for the advice. Our baby has never been sick before 🙁
@abbyful: based on that video, he defiantly doesn’t have reverse sneezing.
