you don’t.  You get to decide that when you have a kid.

SO’s best friend is named Maxie.

It really isn’t all that bad. In fact SO’s friend wears it well. He was never teased over it, is a popular, happy and successful guy. If he has made it to almost 30 and he’s fine, I’m sure your nephew will be too.

Actually my first thought was “Isn’t that the name of the horse from Tangled?” But honestly it’s not that bad, especially if they plan to call him Max for short. I’d never say anything though; a child’s name is a personal decision for the parents, and not only is it their choice, but you wouldn’t want to make them feel bad for something they might feel very passionate about.

Ohhhhh, it made me think immediately of Monty Python’s Life of Brian…. “Bickus….Dickus!!!!”

Maximus is fine. He’ll be Max. He’ll get teased. It happens to everyone no matter what their name, so I’m sure he’ll be fine.

@mcarey2:  You should probably not try to talk her out of it since it’s her child.

Yeah. You really shouldn’t try to talk her out of it. It’s none of your business. And I don’t think Maximus is bad, And I reallylike Max. I also think gladiator/emperor, not ass, and I work in medicine!

@mcarey2:  Uh. I can’t help but be a little peeved reading these responses.

My nephew is named Maximus. We all call him Max. He is my godson and only nephew.

Even before Gladiator came out, my brother always said if he had a son he would name him Max. Then Gladiator came out and we were HUGE fans of the movie.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie, but it has positive connotations connected to the name.

To each their own, but you cannot say anything. If you choose to have kids one day, you’ll realize how many people are always wanting to throw in their opinion on what you should name your child. Until you have kids of your own, you get no say.

I have an adult guy friend named Max (Maxwell), and my first thought was of “Gladiator” too. Maximus is actually a very classic name. A very, very, veryyyyyyy Classic name. He’ll be alright!

My son is Maximus as I was a classics major. It is also common in Greek culture. He is known as Max. What your sister does concerning her children is none of your business and this may be a good time for you to practice what I learned in kindergarten, if you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all.

@petalpetal:  Agreed. It’s not a terrible name. It may not be your taste, OP, but there’s no reason for you to freak out about it. Fortunately, parents don’t need the input of other family members to make decisions about their children. Hopefully when your nephew comes along you won’t show your disdain for his name, lest you turn out to be the bully you’re so concerned about him facing in school.

I like the name Max, not too keen on Maximus. I went to school with a Maximilian and not many people knew that was his full name, we called him Max.

@mcarey2:  I love the name Max (and Maximilian!) I think Maximis is cute and he can go by max if he hates it.

i don’t think you should say a word to her about your dislike. That’s rude. It’s her child and shes the only person who has to like the name.

@mcarey2:  I know a Maximillian! I think Maximus is awesome. People will just call him max anyway which is super cute
