I have a story kind of like yours.  Well, the beginning is very different,  after being together 22 years (4 dating, 18 married), I too realized the convenience of putting up with being treated badly was not healthy for me (and our children) in so many ways.  A co-worker with a huge house gave me a key should I ever need to get away with my (almost adult) children to a place (now ex)husband wouldn’t find us.  With enough bedrooms for myself and my children, I finally took him up.  He watched (from a distance) everything I went through.  Some days I was just a zombie and would come home and sit in a chair with a blanket around me.  He fixed dinner, cleaned, laundry, etc.  He helped me be strong when it would have been so easy to cave in and go back.  He still tells people that he never dreamed what happened would.  Our friendship, with enough time, turned into so much more.  I now know how I (and my children) should have been treated.  A few days ago, I reminded him that it started 10 yaers ago.  He couldn’t believe it.  I pray that my daughter who is getting married in a few months will feel like I did on her wedding day.  I felt like a princess.  Really, when I look at my photos from that day, that’s what comes to mind every time.  And I still feel that way today.  Oh, we have our ups and downs, but I am not afraid to come home.  I am not afraid to tell him I disagree.  And the good times are like heaven.  Even coming home after work and sitting on lawn chairs while supper is cooking, seems so peaceful after the life I had been in.  He is older than I (he just retired in January), and I pray that he lives a long long time so that this does not end anywhere in the forseeable future (kind of morbid, but a truth I must face the possibility of).  I am just thankful I had a second chance at a life everyone deserves.
