I’m not much for mushy-gushy stuff, but being ridiculously in love will change a person!
After almost 5 years together, my Fiance popped the question this past Saturday.
I’m not going to lie, I had my suspicions! He’s usually such a cool, level-headed guy, but the days/hours leading up to the actual proposal he was acting a bit odd, which definitely piqued my sensors.
We’d been talking about marriage for the better part of 2 years now, so we both knew it was only a matter of time before it happened.
Two or three days before the actual proposal I proposed (pun intended) that I plan a fun day for us on Saturday since the weather would be nice (it’s April in Chicago, so you have to take those days when you can), and I knew that he’d been a bit stressed at work, so I wanted a day to just enjoy ourselves. However, Fiance said, “No! I have plans.” He never says no, which automatically caught me off-guard. Fiance worked late Thursday and Friday, so we didn’t get to see each other (we both still live with our parents – and yes, we are 30 – so we’ve been good about saving money). When he called late on Friday he warned me to come over unannounced, as I do sometimes, and that I should wait until he tells me to head out.
Saturday rolls around, and my parents are asking what time I was going to head out – I relayed the information – but Fiance had already asked my parents for their permission earlier in the week, so they were in on the plan. Around 2pm on Saturday he finally texts that I should head out ASAP, but I tell him that I’m not done getting ready and proceed to take my sweet time. At this point I’m still not thinking that a proposal is imminent, but I’d just hopped out of the shower, and at least wanted to dry my hair.
As I’m heading out the door, Fiance calls to see if I’m on my way – I shake my keys into the receiver so he can hear that I’m literally on my way out. It was such a beautifully sunny day I decided to take the “scenic” route to his house. We live about 30 minutes from each other. He texts me to let me know when I turn onto his street. As I’m driving I’m debating whether I should stop at Starbucks to get my favorite drink and decide against it since I know Fiance would most likely also want to go to Starbucks.
I pull into FI’s driveway, and on this 80 degree day, I see him walk out the door wearing a dark blue button-up dress shirt, and black slacks. I automatically thing something is really up since Fiance is always hot and sweaty, so he would not subject himself to such clothing if he did not have to. I comment on how nice he looks, and he said, “It’s all for you.” He leads me through the kitchen to the closed door of his dining room. When he opens it, I see the dining table made up with candles and a sushi feast in front of, complete with miso soup and seaweed salad. As I get closer to the table I see he’d printed out pictures of me in front of previous sushi feasts on our past anniversaries. This is when I knew what was coming. By The Way, Fiance and I have eaten at more than 50 different sushi places and intend of dying together from mercury poisoning.
Fiance reaches over to the big sushi platter, and he picks up a piece, which I can ear something metallic clinking against the ceramic platter. He fumbles a bit, but I see the sparkle of the ring! He gets down on one knee and says, “Will you marry me?” in the sweetest voice.
I freak out. I can’t believe what is going on! I keep saying, “Are you serious?! Are you serious?!” and back away and start pacing the room in excitement. I then realize I hadn’t actually answered his question – I blurt out “Yes, yes… YARN!” (an inside joke between us). He slips on the ring and it fits perfectly. I’m still in shock. He sits down and asks if we can start eating. After all, sushi must be eaten ASAP! I can’t bring myself to sit down because I’m still pacing the room in excitement. When I finally do get to sit down, I’m unable to eat because I’m just so shocked! My hands are shaking and, my spoon keeps clinking on the bowl.
I shreik in excitement periodically during our romantic, sushi proposal dinner – so excited to finally be engaged to a man that is better than anything my dreams could have ever come up with.
In any case, I just wanted to share my special moment with you ladies, and I can’t wait to hear your awesome proposal stories below!
