@sarahroby:  Ours did double duty as ushers,  except for the Best Man who waited with the groom. The groomsmen have absolutely no duties otherwise.

Mine did double duty, as did my brother’s in law (including me).  In Britain, one has a Best Man, and Ushers.  They don’t use the term groomsmen, as I understand it.  Generally, in Canada, we use the term groomsmen to encompass the best man and ushers.  Having ushers as another role, outside the groom’s party, is very uncommon here, as far as I’m aware.

@Duncan:  This – In the UK we don’t have groomsmen at all. Ushers are basically it.

Honestly I didn’t realise there was a difference.

We are having all male cousins be ushers (there are 4 or them).  We aren’t having them shell out the money to match the groomsmen, they just dress nice.  It was a way of getting more family involved in the wedding.  I’ve definitely know it is popular to have groomsmen double as ushers.  We wanted to take pictures of each of us individually with our maids/men respectively up until the wedding starts so we have less pictures to take after the wedding, so our groomsmen will be too busy before to serve as a ushers.

I will have two ushers (a male and a female) They will hand out programs and assist anyone who may need help getting to their seat. Mostly they were two friends that I wanted to be involved, but I didn’t want a TON of people up front with me, esp since Fiance only has his Bridesmaid or Best Man and a groomsman who will hold the rings (FI is referring to him as “Lord of the Rings”)
