I am 18 weeks pregnant with baby #1. I always get my nails done for special occasions. Canadian Thanksgiving in this weekend, and I am seeing DH’s family. Yesterday I went to my favourite dayspa (actually it’s more of a ‘chop shop’ but they work hard to make you FEEL like it’s a nice place) for my usual eyebrow and upper lip wax, and without thinking about it asked for a manicure too. I always prefer shellac nails. I have already had them painted once this pregnancy for my wedding anniversary, and nobody batted an eye. This time, the lady sitting in the chair next to me overheard me talking to the technician about my pregnancy and started throwing MAJOR shade! She butted in our conversation and told me that painting my nails is toxic for my baby and I should be ashamed of myself and bla bla bla.
Putting this womans rudeness aside….
I have googled it, and asked my friends who have had babies and gotten mixed information. Nobody has outright said that you CAN’T…just different varying degrees of ‘caution’. What do you ladies think?
PS: For some context I don’t paint my nails regularity (maybe once every other month at MOST). At my dayspa they put a little fan on you to keep the smells and vapours away from your face anyways. I refrained completely for my first trimester.

I painted my nails all throughout both pregnancies and dyed my hair. People go crazy. Just be sensible, don’t drink smoke or eat raw meat.

OMG I can’t believe how rude the lady was!
I am not pregnant, but a couple of my colleagues recently were and they both continued getting their nails done throughout the pregnancies 😉

I’d tell her to mind her own uterus.

I got mine done. My OB said the biggest “risk” is the fumes may make you feel queasy

That rude woman needs to mind her own business. Unless she is your doctor, she doesn’t get any say. People are assholes – somehow a woman’s body becomes public property when she’s pregnant, up for all sorts of inappropriate, unsolicited comments and touching!
I’m 30 weeks and getting monthly mani-pedis. All my friends and ladies I know at work got regular mani/pedis during their pregnancies – all had healthy babies. I mean, I’m not drinking the nail polish, and my usual nail salon is pretty well ventilated so I’m not too worried about the fumes.

Im certainly no expert but never in my almost 36 years of life (including medical training and time working in a NICU) have I ever heard of a baby born with 3 eyes and a tail because his mother “painted her nails” while pregnant. You are much kinder than I am O/P. I know I wouldnt have handled that woman with the grace and restraint you did. Best wishes on a healthy pregnancy

That woman can stick it. I’m 18 weeks and have had my nails done a few times. If I can remember to bring my own polish (that’s 4 free blah blah) then I do, but if I forget it’s really no big deal.

my baby is 6 weeks old and I painted my nails and dyed my hair while I was pregnant and he is a happy and healthy baby, do what you want as long as you feel happy about it

I’m 20 weeks and got my nails done last week because I was going to a wedding. Maybe I wouldn’t do it if you are a nail biter, but other than that I’m sure it’s fine.

I got my nails painted AND drank caffeine (the horror!) And both my kids are fine. A little weird, but fine 😉 I was a raging hormonal B when pregnant, I would have probably lost my shit at that lady!

I tend to err on the side of caution-I do my own nails with 5 free brands just to be safe. But, I’m not a fan of professional nail jobs anyhow bc of the potential for germs and whatnot…I know they are supposed to be super clean about things but people can be lazy and I’m just weird about that kind of stuff! Regardless that woman should mind her business. People are so intrusive. I had a guy tell me what I should name my child, and that his ex-wife was unable to concieve bc she wasn’t religious. holy WTF…we were in line at the grocery store!

I haven’t read anything about it and I’ve pretty much googled everything on what’s safe during pregnancy, I’ve done my nails a few times, I don’t bother often because my nails grow so quickly now, and I also had my hair colored once and did an at home hair dye job once. I think risk when it comes to these kinds of chemicals is more so when you’re working with them daily.

I was told not to paint my nails with regular polish because most contain toulene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde. I thought it was common knowledge. If I do get them painted I use Zoya nail polish and nail polish remover, which has none of those chemicals. I’m sure you’ll be fine though.

I’m 14 weeks tomorrow and have been getting my nails done every two weeks for the past 15 years and I’m not going to stop now. I got acrylics done at week 3, but switched to Shellac two weeks after that.
Tell Ms. RudeAss to mind her own uterus and she should be ashamed of how her mother raised such a rude woman.
