My mum dyed her hair, painted her nails, drank the occasional glass of wine and had a daily coffee while pregnant with my sister and I. We are absolutely fine.

Her behaviour was definitely rude, there’s no doubt about that. But I do agree with what she said. I don’t go to nail salons, pregnant or not, because of the fumes. They’re really not good for you and there has been research according to which the fumes can be dangerous to unborn babies. Most nail polish brands contain toxic ingredients and there has been research according to which these substances can be discovered in urine after your nails have been painted. There are some brands that are definitely better than others though.

I can’t link to the sources because this is just something I researched when I was pregnant and made the decision not to paint my nails. In the end, it’s everyone’s own decision but I would at least make sure to go only to salons that are well-ventilated… and not to take a newborn there (yes, I’ve seen newborns in nail salons through the window…)!

I’m almost 21 weeks and while I haven’t gone to the nail salon I would (and plan to this weekend) and I’ve painted my own nails.  I have a friend who got her nails done several times throughout her pregnancy and her baby boy is perfectly healthy at 5 months old.  People are so nosy.

I am 31 weeks this week and have been getting my nails done with a gel polish since finding out I was pregnant. No concerns. I get them done about every 3 weeks due to fast growth, whereas non-PG, I could go once a month. Sometimes 3 weeks is almost too much time in between.

I’ve also gotten my hair colored twice now, once in week 13 and again just a few weeks ago.

I asked my general practitioner some questions when I forst got PG (she used to be an OB), and she had no concerns on either… and most places these days are very well ventilated anyway. It was the concern YEARS ago that these places did not have great ventilation systems, which was the issue – at least for hair salons.
