The Castle REOPENS for the 2013 Season on Saturday ~ May 11th.
The BEST PART… is you can marry at Boldt Castle for just $ 200, PLUS transportation and entry fee.
So quite reasonable… and NO Extra Fees… which is WHY it is a popular location for Engagement / Wedding Photos etc.
The Castle is in the USA, but you can get there from either the US or Canada… via one of the 1000 Islands Cruise Boats (that make regular stops)… OR you can make private arrangements for a water-taxi.
If you don’t have a US Passport, then upstate NY is a good choice… although it isn’t as scenic or offers as much to see or do as the Canadian side.
The downside, to Boldt Castle, is it doesn’t have accommodations etc… you can stay tho in one of the nearby towns / villages (on either side of the River / Border).

Another alternative is the “other” castle in the 1000 Islands… Singer Castle.

They offer both Accommodations & a meal for Honeymooners (can’t tell you what truthfully either is like… just that they offer them)

Personally…
On the US side, I like Syracuse a good sized city… and about 1-1/2 Hours from the 1000 Islands (via Alexandria Bay… where you can find transportation to the Castle)
On the Canadian side, I like the small city of Kingston (about 30 Minutes from Gananoque OR about 1 Hour from Rockport… where you can find transportation to the Castle)
OR plan on spending just the day around the castle, and look at staying in Ottawa ~ Canada’s Capital City which is aprox 1-1/2 Hours from Rockport.
Ottawa is a fabulous city year-round… not a HUGE city, but has some great things to see and do as it is the National Capital.

As is Charleston SC which is approximately 2 Hours further to the North.
In Charleston, you could probably make arrangements to get married on one of the local Plantations…
For historic authenticity there is Drayton Hall… but I also like the amazing scenery to be found at some of the others (no original mansions tho)… Boone Hall – Middleton – Magnolia… these 3 offer a variety of out-buildings, as well as some gorgeous Oak Avenues, and incredible manicured gardens.

I’m about 90% sure that we’re going with Savannah…then on over to Hilton Head and Beaufort….then up to see The Biltmore Estate in Ashville on our way back to Ohio. We’re taking 7 days. I’ve already spoken with a wedding planner/minister about doing the ceremony in Forsythe Park, the hotel in Savannah (The Marshall House) in which we plan to stay (which is an awesome looking place!). We found a great hotel in Hilton Head that we really like and it’s very close to Beaufort as well…
The other 10% is leaning toward putting things off for a couple of months longer so that the weather would be good for Maine. We found a lighthouse (Portland Head Light) that we love as the location and then we were thinking of going down to Salem, MA, Boston and then Newport, RI. to check out the mansions of Newport.
As long as everything goes according to plan….we will be married in 13 to 15 months. 13 if we choose Savannah and 15 if we choose Portland. Still a long time away, but it gives me plenty of time to have my dress made, make all of the travel arrangements while also finding the best rates, and most importantly, I’ll have 10 months to save even more money for the trip itself. I plan on doing some MAD SHOPPING. lol
I’m a planner. What can I say? Hell, we’ve lived together for 8 years…what’s another year? At least it will be well orchestrated. lol
MemberHave you looked at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. Very storybook, no cars allowed, huge porch. Might be worth a look.
MemberIm partial to south east…. Jacksonville…. or any part of FL. South Carolina, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head and Wild dunes are great locations.
