Perhaps an American Bee will need to correct me here, but I believe you can change your name at any point after legal marriage… immediately, or months or even years down the line.  Of course you can claim taxes as married once you are, there are plenty of women who never change their names to their husband’s, so that has nothing to so with your legally married status.  I agree with your passport concerns, especially if your trip to India is shortly after your civil marriage, and there will not be time to change your passport.

“In the marriage certificate I have entered my new hyphenated last name”  I don’t know about this.  I believe the marrige certificate is signed with your maiden name, as the name change is totally separate from marriage.

Is there another girl in your family who has done the same thing and married in the USA before the big ceremony in India?  You might want to ask some cousins to see what they did.

I also agree with MissNoodles  You need to be legally married first which means you have the person who legally married you and your Fiance signature on the marriage certificate and your signatures on t as well. Then you can start changing your last name when you have the original certificate in your hands because you need to show the people that to change your last name for your drivers license,SSN ect..
