I actually just changed my name after getting married last month.  All in all I’d say the process took about 2 or 3 weeks, just because I mailed in rather than going to the social security office, and then had to find a good day to go to the dmv after receiving new social security card, etc.  I still have yet to get my passport done.  For the most part each “step” has been surprisingly fast, just gotta make sure you hit everything.

It didn’t take long at all, I got most of it done in a weeks time.

It doesn’t take long at all to make the official, legal change in your name.  What takes a lot of time is notifying all of the businesses and organizations with which you have accounts or are otherwise affiliated (banks, credit card companies, alumni associations, retirement-plan administrators, etc.) that you’ve made the change.
