I have a question for all of you who have changed your names. So, earlier this month, I changed my name with the social security office, then changed my drivers license, and so far have just changed with my bank. My name is hyphenated to eliminate confusion (which so far has proved helpful.) Well, yesterday, I went in to pick up my birth control, and the pharmacy told me that my insurance had been terminated. Did this happen to any other bees when you changed your name? Is it possible that this is the reason?
I asked my boss what was going on, and she said that they had decided to extend our coverage on a month to month as of 1/1/13, but that as far as she knew I was covered. I know I need to change my name with the insurance, but I literally JUST started getting my new forms of ID. Can they do this?
They’re lucky I wasn’t trying to get something important like bipolar meds.

Did you inform your insurance company that you changed your name/got married? They would need to update your records and send you a new insurance ID card as well. If you’ve already done that though, I’m not sure.

If you’re covered, then they should be able to find you by either name. I never notified my insurnace specifically and didn’t even change my name at work for a while. I still use my maiden name at the pharmacy and have nevrer had an issue and I’ve changed everything else at this point.

No that did not happen to me. I notified my HR department when I changed my name and they informed me that the name shouldn’t matter with the insurance, as long as my date of birth and social security number still matched they would cover me. So for a few months my insurance coverage was still under my maiden name while my ID and everything have been legally changed to my new last name. I never got denied coverage.

Call the number on the back of your insurance card and find out whats going on. Your insurance company wouldnt have changed your name without you or your boss/HR notifying them.

I tried calling, but they were closed yesterday, and again today for the holiday. I have no idea what the hell is going on. I didn’t think it could be the name change, but I was stumped and trying to figure it out.

That didn’t happen to me. We waited until open enrollment to change my name with the insurance company.

I just called my insurance company after I changed my name and they updated it. No problems at all.

sbottiani I highly doubt a company would knowingly drop you due something like a name change, especially without notice! I think there was a glitch with something. Hopefully you’ll gt an answer from the health insurance company today since today isn’t a holiday.

That’s pretty weird. My health insurance was not terminated when I changed my name and it took me a little bit to change it with them, too.

My health insurance was informed by my employer about my name change. After I informed payroll and human resources about my name (and provided proof), my insurance issued new cards with my new name on them.
