I’m stressing out… I just got a tentative job offer from a great location, but it involves getting hired by the county. I know the process is already long and complicated, and I’m really worried that the fact that I just changed my name will further complicate it.
I changed my SSN and applied for a new driver’s license. I already have my new soc. sec. card, but I don’t know how long it will take for my new ID to arrive. I can’t get livescan, etc. done without ID, and I’m worried that if they call me in and I have to put it off, they will choose to hire someone else instead. This goes along with my more general worries that they’ll have an issue with hiring me under my new name since my degree, references, etc are all under my old name. I told the supervisor that I changed my name when she called to tell me about the job, and she sounded concerned about it.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Any advice/reassurance??

@loving_life: Do you have the old ID? If so you can show the legal documents leading to name change along with old photo ID. It really should not be a problem. I assume that you did not change the SS number, just the name. (You said number).

@loving_life: You should be able to show them your old ID and the temporary ID that you should have been issued.

Bring your old ID and a copy of your marriage license. I don’t know about CA, but in NY there’s a line on the license for your new name. That’s what I used to change my name at the bank, etc. I also got a letter from SS when I applied for my new SSN. It had my new name on it and said my new card would be arriving soon. It took less than a week to get my new SS card.

It took less than a week to get my new SS card and less than a week to get the new driver’s license as well.

Yes, my marriage license/certificate has a line on it with my new name.
But for things like LiveScan, you need an actual ID with the name you are doing it under. Right now, I don’t have ID in my new name until my license arrives. I’m hoping that’s soon!! I guess I could do it under my old name and have my new name as my “AKA” rather than vice-versa, not sure if that would work…
Yes, hoping that will work with the HR department. But then again, since the process is so slow, I’m just hoping that my new DL will arrive before HR even calls me in!
Anyone in California? How long did it take to get your new driver’s license? It’s been a week, I’m hoping it’ll arive within two weeks, although they do say they have up to 60 days to send it.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Just bring a photo ID and your marriage license. That should be proof enough until all your ID’s are updated. This is what the TSA recommends when traveling (like if you change your name after you book your ticket).
I also work in HR and know that when conducting background checks you always ask for “other names known by”, so I’m sure it is no surprise to them that your old job and schools will know you by your maiden name.
