Hi there! I did my name change at the Secretary of State yesterday. I know in some states it’s the DMV or another different federal dept. Whatever.
BE FOREWARNED….. THEY MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A NEW PICTURE!!!!!! When the gal at the counter told me that I wanted to faint. WHO KNEW!??!
I realize it’s probably not like this in every state (in CA when I got married back in 1996, they did not re-photo me), so I figured I was ok. Not so much.
So, yeah. My advice is don’t go and get your hair dyed and brows waxed, and leave the salon with wet hair and no makeup on to go do your name change bc you’re in the same neighborhood and it seems like a good way to maximize your time. Because then you’ll be stuck with an atrocious ID photo. Just like me. YAY!

Yeah, unfortunately I believe that most states do this. In MD, your able to keep your picture for one renewal, so basically for 10 years you can keep the same picture. Since I don’t like my current pic and my license expires this year anyway, I’m going to renew and change my name (and hopefully my address too if we find a house!) at the end of the year complete with a new picture

How annoying! I saw this on their website, so I was expecting it. However, after almost an hour in line (combined with broken AC in my car on the drive over), I still looked terrible in my new photo. Oh well, at least I only have it until my bday in 2011 when it expires.

Haha — thanks for the headsup!!! I never go to the DMV anymore if I’m not ready for a photo op, their procedures change so frequently and are so different state to state!

I think I should have clarified why I was so irritated. I moved to Michigan from San Diego eight years ago, and refused to get a Michigan ID bc that meant I really lived here and NOT in my beloved San Diego. So, Fiance (now hubs)made me get a new ID about a year ago. Ambushed me into going! (not really!)
Legally, I had to get a new ID since my CA id was expired. I don’t have a drivers license bc driving scares me, so that wasn’t an issue. But anyway, when I got my new MI ID was picture was AWESOME!! I was pretty impressed with myself!!
So the wet dog and wonky, blotchy eyebrow picture is really disturbing to me! Husband says that now that I have an ID photo I don’t like, he hopes that will motivate me to drive! Hmmmm….

I went knowing I would get a new picture in DC and when I finally got to the front of the line and everything THE PHOTO MACHINE WAS BROKEN. I was beyond infuriated. They couldn’t print any new licenses that day. I had to come back again the next day and wait in line some more and do it all over again. I think I did get fast-tracked though because my second trip was much speedier than the first, despite there being about the same number of people there.
