I live in NY and will be getting married in NY (not sure if these rules vary by state). If I am getting married in September, and my honeymoon is not until December, can I wait until I get back to change my name, even if I check the box on the marriage license that I will be changing it? I have to renew my passport by October, and I am worried that if I try to do everything between my wedding and honeymoon, it might get crazy. So, can I check the box on the license that I’m changing it, but not legally change anything until I get back in December? Thanks!!!!

Check if there’s a time limitation for a name change in NY. Someone told me it was 90 days or 1 year after marriage to do the name change before you have to do it the hard way through the courts. But with that said, you can go to Social security and get the name change done immeidately, and then just wait to get licences/passport change. But if you have to update your passport in Oct anyways, then might as well do it with the new changed name if you ask me. Why renew it with the old one, and then have to change it again.

Just be careful that if your flights are booked under your current name, the airlines may change a fee to change name.
