Hi! Been a lurker for awhile and now finally posting. FH and I are waiting until December to go on our Belizean honeymoon. We are getting married August 18. Should I wait until after to change my name or is that enough time to do everything? Just wondering due to flights.

I would check with the airline, and see what their policy is on name changes. If they won’t change the name on your ticket, you might have to wait.
Also, when you change your name at DMV they’ll try to take your old lisence away from you, leaving you with no ID. Luckily I knew this, so I lied and told them I lost it. Just a head’s up, in case you need the ID with your old name on it for flights and such.

Since you are getting married in August, that will be enough time to get a passport back and get the SS card and drivers license back. But make sure to see how much it will cost to change your name on your ticket before doing anything.

We’re going to Europe about a month or so after we get married and I’m planning on waiting until we get back to change everything just to save me some stress.

Thank you! We included US Airways gift cards as part of our registry so we’re waiting to purchase the tickets until after the wedding. i’ve already booked our hotels though. I think I’ll wait and see how long it takes for us to get our license before I make the decision.

How long is the turnaround on marriage certificates where you’re getting married? I had mine back to me the same week as my wedding, but other counties in the same state take several weeks. You’ll need the certificate to change your SSN. Then you’ll have to bring proof to the DMV that your name was changed with Social Security. (if you change your name with the SSA in person, you can come back the next day and pick up a printout as proof). I don’t know how long it’ll take to change your passport, though. I haven’t done that yet.

I think right now the turn around is 6-8 weeks for a name change on a passport. You should be fine.
We’re also doing a delayed honeymoon, I have already legally changed my name, just waiting for my passport to come back.

We aren’t going on our honeymoon until Feb(4 months later). I think I’m just gonna wait and do all the name change stuff until after the honeymoon as well just to have one less thing to stress about.

Honestly with all the problems my best friend had with name changing after her wedding I’d wait till I got back if it was me. Since its just legal documentation you can still go by your new last name but why throw that wrench Into international travel. Government takes their sweet time and what if you DON’T get your passport etc back in time or your documentation doesn’t match?

We are honeymooning at the end of July and even though I really wanted to change my name ASAP I decided to wait. We would have had to pay to change the name on my ticket if for some reason the name change didn’t happen in time and it didn’t seem like it was worth the risk. For example I didn’t realize that it can take up to 30 days just to file the damn marriage license (here anyway). Then it has to go through the Social Security office, then the Passport Office. Too many places to get held up!

as long as you have enough time to change your SS card drivers license, passport, bank, credit cards…ect it will be fine
