My Fi and i are getting legally married this week but our wedding isn’t until august. I have to change my name on a few things (SSN, Bank Accounts, Insurance, ETC) . I was not planning to change my name at work until after the wedding in august. So if I legally change my name now will I still be able to use my maden name at work to sign nurses notes, MARs and ect?

@nursejp06: Glad to see a fellow bee in the nursing field 🙂 If I was you I would NOT use your maiden name when charting, but I don’t believe you would get in trouble for it. If you were called to testify in a lawsuit against the hospital, or for malpractice/negligence (( I wish that on no one , but it happens alot, and we have that malpractice ins. for a reason lol)) , you’re testimony may seem unreliable if you didn’t even use your legal name on your charting.

Thats what i was thinking was about the legalities of all the paperwork we sign. I wasn’t sure how the nursing board/ courts would honor this. I guess i could check with the board of nursing.

Actually, you need to use the name they have you under at work. It actually looks more suspicious in the case of testimony issues to be charting under a name your work does not have on record. Besides, if you are changing your SSN now, it would be best to have your forms match that. Plus you need to chart by what your nursing license states. All it took for me to change my name on my nursing license was an email to the board.

I think I am just going to wait to change my name until the actual wedding in august. we really don’t want everyone to know until then that we are married. and considering the fact that I work in the same small town that I grew up in, everyone would know.

Well technically you don’t have to change your name at all…i’d just keep it until the actual wedding since you don’t want anyone knowing you’re married.
