I bought a house two years ago in my former name. I recently married and my name changed. My mortgage and deed are both in my former name.
Is it a requirement to update name changes on the mortgage and deed, or is it acceptable to leave the existing name alone since I can easily prove I am the same person?
Also, somone told me that in order to change my name on the mortgage I also have to refinance, and I have no desire to do that. My husband has no desire to be on the mortgage or deed, so adding his name is not an issue.
We live in NJ if that makes any difference.

Not sure if the rules are different in the USA, but in Canada most people submit a copy of their marriage license to the bank to indicate that their last name has changed, but they do not change the name on the deed, as it requires an amending agreement and is quite costly.

@[email protected]: I would doubt that you need to refi to change YOUR name, but to ADD a name yes. I’d just contact my lender to ask.
Why does your H not want to be on the title? Would you will your house to him should something happen to you?

Thank you for your reply. If I were to die, I’ve willed my house to my children with a provision that he may live there until he decides to move or dies. He understands that and it is a non issue.

I know this is an old post, but I’m bumping it up in hopes somebody can offer some advice. I’m in the same situation… I own a home and my name has changed (also in NJ) anyone have personal experience or tips? I’m planning on contacting my mortgage company on Monday
