I did DL first, then Bank Account, and like 4 months later, SS card.  All were very easy and quick.

I’m with you. I started the process two weeks ago. I knew I wanted to change my last name, but it was harder for me emotionally that I thought it would be. Just talked to a group of married friends who all said the same thing — changing your name is hard, even when you want to, because you’re losing a part of your identity.

Congrats on getting the ball rolling. I filed my name change with SS, got my card in the mail within a week and went to get my driver’s license the day it arrived. I haven’t gotten any further. I was told the next step was passport, but I’ve decided to wait since you have to file for a new one completely.

Next step for me is updating all the bank accounts and credit cards, and then all the other random accounts with my name. Once I had my SS card, I updated everything at my office to my new name.

Congrats and can I just say you are on TOP of things. Lol. It took me a few weeks before I even got the ball rolling lol… After SS and DL, I changed bank accounts, and then I had to get a new passport

I did everything the day after I got back from my honeymoon.  I had the day off, so I went to the bank, DMV, and SS office.  I could do most everything else by phone (a few places needed a scanned copy of the marriage certificate).  The only thing that took longer was my passport – I had to do that by mail.

So 9 days after I was married, almost everything was done!  I was happy the marriage certificate was ready that quickly – yours hasn’t even been a week!!

I waited a little while after I got back from our honeymoon because we had a flight scheduled under my maiden name a few weeks later and I wanted to make sure I still had my driver’s license to match. But it was an easy process. I changed SS card first, took maybe 20 min because I got there when it opened. Then my driver’s license. In the state I live in, you can make an appointment to go the DMV so there wasn’t a minute of waiting. Darling Husband changed the bank account/credit cards for me. I haven’t gotten a passport yet though, I should probably do that soon!

rubyrane:  Just to clarify, are you talking about the license or the certificate?

rubyrane:  In RI, you have to change your SS first so I did that. Then, after waiting in line at the DMV, I found out I had to wait 24 hours after updating my SS to get in line for my DL because it takes the federal system an overnight to upload/push the information to the statewide DL system. Who know’s if this is true or if RI is just slow as shit but whatever, I had to wait.

I updated my passport within a few days of getting my new DL.

I hyphenated. If I could do it again, I’d just keep my maiden name.

In CA it’s 2 weeks until you receive your marriage license back. I got married in Oct 2013 and I didn’t change my name until Feb 2014. OOPS. But had to go to SS office first, then DMV. Once I got copies of my new SS card and license, I changed it at the bank, credit cards, etc. It took me a bit longer but I think if I would of been “on top of things” it would of taken about 6 weeks.

rubyrane:  Hahaha, that’s awesome. My friend is just now changing her name and she’s over 2 years into her marriage as well. I know I wasn’t too far behind but the process was just so many steps and so much waiting that I said I’ll do it when I do it!
