Hey bees, I’m hoping one of you can answer this question. It’s not something Google could easily answer. I’ve changed my name at the Social Security Office, my next step is the DMV to get a new license. My question is, can I change my car registration too, or will I have to change the name with my auto loan company first? I’m not sure how it works with the title being held by someone other than me?

Honestly, I think it’s gonna depend on the company and how they have the process set up. It’d be best just to call them and ask. Is the title under your maiden name? That’s still you
. You have documentation showing that you legally changed your name. That’s a different question than if the title isn’t under your name (previous or current) at all.

I didn’t bother changing the title because the RMV employee said that I would need to turn in my original title and wait for a new one in the mail….she then said they sometimes lost the title and it becomes a nightmare so she recommended against it. I didn’t have any issues when I sold it. For the registration they said (at least in MA) that it follows whatever name is on your license, not your title, but she also said it would auto update at the next registration and not to waste money updating it early.

Auto loan company first, at least that’s how it works where I live.
