A question for the married bees…
If you changed your name when you got married, how long did it take you to get all of your paperwork in order and to complete the entire name change process?
I ask b/c I’m getting married on July 31st, and I have international travel for work at the very beginning of September. I’m worried about getting my names changed and receiving my new passport in time for the trip, so I’m not sure which name I should buy the tickets for the flight under…

It took me a week to get my marriage license back. Then I went to SS. It took a few weeks to get my new SS card back. I didn’t go to to the DMV for over a month because I was moving. Passports take over a month to come back unless you pay extra to get it expedited (which probably isn’t worth it). You should book your tickets for your trip under your maiden name and don’t worry about changing your passport until after you get back.

Hmm… sounds good except that I have to fly internationally for work again about a month later. So now it looks like I won’t get to do the legal name change until mid-October? In the meantime should I just start using my married name in day-to-day life anyways? …or maybe I will just pay for the expidited passport…

my marriage license was back to me by the time i got back from the honeymoon 2 weeks later, but they say it takes a week. i went to ss that monday. in my state you can go to get your driver’s license with just the letter from ss that states that you’ve been there, so you just have to wait until the next day for ss to put the paperwork through. in some states you have to wait until you have your actual card. i’m not planning on traveling abroad any time soon (we went straight to the honeymoon so i just waited to do all this and used my maiden name on my documents), so i have no idea how long it will take for the passport.

I’ve been married for 1.5 years and all of my stuff still isn’t changed over to my new name. Partly because I’m lazy and partly because my bank is dumb (I think they are all I have left at this point). To save yourself the stress, though, I would just book everything for your trip under your maiden name and take care of your name change when you return.

I believe you can start the process, but fly internationally using your maiden name. Just buy your ticket in the name on your passport.

Yeah, I looked at the website to get a passport and it says 4-6 weeks for processing or 2-3 weeks if you pay more. It looks like you can send it with just your marriage license and your passport but you need an original copy of the marriage license sent to them (and you will need to show an originial to social security and the DMV). Maybe get an extra copy from the county clerk to send away?
Oh and while you are renewing, you aren’t going to be able to fly internationally since you need to have your passport with you. The expedited service might be the best thing for you.
