I changed my name with social security and received my new card. I have not yet gone to the DMV to get a new license though and have not changed my name anywhere else. Should I let my employer know now that my name has changed with social security or wait until after I get my new license and have at least changed my name on the bank account where my direct deposit goes? (I can’t change my name at the bank until I have my new license).

@MrsWBS: I changed my name with SSA and the DMV on the same day, one right after the other.
I would have your license changed immediately and then change your name with your employer and bank. I’m not sure about this, but it seems to me that your direct deposit is based on your account number, which would still be the same regardless of your name.

my employer only needed to see a copy of my SSN to confirm the name change. they didn’t need the license. your bank will need the license though, but direct deposit is based on your account and routing number, not your name.

Changing your name with your employer won’t affect your direct deposit. I changed my name on SS and DMV but didn’t change it with my bank yet. My employer changed my name on direct deposit and I still get paid. It goes by your account number

For tax purposes, employers typically require that your name in their system match what is on your Social Security Card. I work in HR and handle the name changes and only require the SS Card not a drivers license to make the change.

awesome, thanks everyone!! 🙂 Good to know about the direct deposit – I read conflicting things online!
