Can anyone help me out with the legalities and timings of name changes?
Wedding date is at the end of September. I intend to make my maiden name into my middle name (don’t have a middle name now) and take Fiance last name. That is how it will go on the marriage license and certificate. We plan on going on a honeymoon mid-October (2 weeks after the wedding) and it may end up being out of the country and require use of a passport.
Can I go to the social security office after the honeymoon (a month after the wedding) to do the name change? If I change it there before the honeymoon, will I have problems using my old passport with the old name on it? I’d have to do a rush on the new passport to get it in time for the trip and would like to avoid this (not so much for the extra cost but for the extra stress)

I would probably wait until after the honeymoon, just to make things easier. My SIL hasn’t changed her passport, and they’ve been married for 6 years. She just takes her marraige license with her and she hasn’t had any problems. So you could always do that if you’re itching to change your name asap.

I wouldn’t change anything until after your honeymoon. It will just make everything simpler. You can definitely go change your name at the ss office a month after the wedding.

You can’t travel with a passport with your old name if your name has been changed, I’m in the process right now of doing my name change, and it’s almost 1 month after my wedding. I just went to the SS office yesterday to order my new card. I would suggest waiting until after the honeymoon. I believe I saw on the paper that you have up to two years after the wedding to apply for a name change with the SS office, but don’t quote me on that.

DO NOT TRAVEL WITH TWO NAMES!!!! Wait until after you get back from your honeymoon to do the name change. Customs officers will not accept paperwork with multiple names. When you travel you are required to have all your documentation in your legal name. There is not enough time for you to get a new social, driver’s license and passport between your wedding and honeymoon.

I agree with other poster. Change your name after you get back from the honeymoon. It will make it a lot easier. It would probably take more time than the two weeks to get the paperwork all processed.

Thanks everyone! I just wasn’t sure if social security had any strict requirements on how soon the name change had to be done after the wedding. I’ll do it after we get back. 🙂

I would definitely wait until after the honeymoon. 2 weeks is just NOT enough time to get a passport and all the documentation.
here’s what I had to do (in n. carolina): after wedding day minister mailed signed marriage license w/included check for official copies. Then a week or 2 later we got the offical copy in the mail (here in NC the ‘application’ and ‘license’ are the same thing). Then I went to the SSC office to apply for name change. No less than 3 days later I could go to the DMV. Then I got my new license in the mail a week or 2 after that. THEN I could apply for a passport. The passport took at least 3 weeks to get mailed back to me.
