I’m just thinking forward, even though my wedding isn’t for another year, I’m wondering about the name changing kits. I guess I worry about missing something and these kits seem to handle it all for you. Has anyone used one of these or planning to? If you’ve used it is it worth spending a little bit of cash? Thanks all.

We just got our marriage license this week and the woman who helped us said to not pay any service like that. She said the company is just trying to get your personal information. She also said you personally have to sign to get things switched over and that’s something the company can’t do.

I’ve heard of companies that don’t require information, but just send you a packet with all the required forms and instructions you need. But NameBirdie site was shut down I believe because of identity theft.
I ended up finding this website:
which gives step-by-step instructions for your name change and thought it was pretty helpful!
I’ve also seen this advertised:
but can’t verify the security of it!

I really don’t think most people need a service like this. I know it seems overwhelming, and I was pretty frustrated just in anticipation of the process, but I was able to get a new license and apply for a new Social Security card all within about 3 hours one morning, and then you discover everything else you have to change along the way (insurance, bank accounts, passport). Even with that haphazard approach and waiting for paperwork to process, everything took about a month.

this site is free and i am sure there are other free ones as well 🙂
I haven’t done this yet, but I plan to!

Becasue I used in a previous life and found it very usefull, I ordered (for the last time) the Name Change Kit for Brides. Nessesary? No. But the cd with pre-written forms is really handy, so is the checklist of every possible agency who you need to change your name with. I spent an afternoon preparing all the letters, even pre-stamping envelopes, and it was super easy. I’ll take one morning off of work to change it ww/ Social Security and DMV, send off my letters, and it’s done. I personally think it’s worth the money. You don’t have to use their online service either.

I have heard a lot of people on here using missnowmrs.com/
I don’t really know what I will do. I dont see myself spending money on something I can do for free.. I may just start making a list of places that I need to change it and add to it every time I think of something new. I will probably start collecting all the forms I need at the beginning of next year that way they will hopefully be the most current and I can use the laser printer at school for free. I am the type of person that will check and recheck forms to make sure i have hte most current before sending it off.
