My Mom gaved me a middle name that no one pronounes correctly. Although, I don’t blame people. How would you pronounce Brianne (Bree-anne right?)….nope my mom pronounces it Brian. Yep, that’s right. Like the boys name. She wanted my name to Brianne (brian), but my dad said No Way Jose.

@thursdayschild:  I am pretty sure that “Avonlea” played on public television in the US, too.  At least I know it did in Boston.

We are leaning towards Penelope even though we know that it may be mispronounced.  Although when read, my name is pretty easy to pronounce, when i say it out loud people always think that I said “Audrey”.

I usually just lurk, but after seeing the comment about Brianne I had to post. That is my name and it is always pronounced wrong! My parents and bf pronounce it Bree-N, and it was supposed to be spelled Brienne, but my grandmother thought no one would be able to pronounce it. Now I get Bree-anne, Breanna, Bree-On, Bree-On-ah, and Brian. It’s frustrating but I only correct people when it’s completely butchered.

I liked the name Aria for a while, then my mom reminded me that it sounded like diarrhea. Thanks.

My name is easy to read off of paper. Libby (short for Elizabeth). But over the phone is a whole new world. “who am I speaking with?” “This is Libby.” “Okay great thanks Olivia.” GAH

@bpcmarj: I remember “Avonlea” too!

A former boss of mine had a daughter named Penelope and they called her Penny as a nickname. I thought it was adorable.

I actaully had no idea it has EVER aired in the US, but you guys are correct! Thanks for pointing that out. I think I assumed such a bad tv show never would have made it out of the maritimes. I just love it as a name, it’s so pretty. It certainly makes the name more appealing now for those babies way off in the distant future.

i am part hispanic and grew up with some fairly unusual names. one being cristobal which is a boys name in spanish. its pronounced with the accent on the i but people tend to read it as is even with an accent over the i and say something that sounds like crystal ball. its actuallya  very pretty spanish name for a little boy. as far as girls names I have a friend named Xochitl . give that one a shot!

On the Brianne train… that is my name too, pronounced Bree-ann. But my name has been butchered my entire life, I generally get Bree-anna but also get Brian (like the guys name) or Bry-anne, Bry-anna, Bree-on, Bree-onna, and then worse I get Leanne, Rhianne, and any other variation of ___-ann you can think of. So fustrating, I generally just go by Bri (Bree) now as there is less room for error.

My last name also gets butchered so when I someone asks my name is usually “Brianne _______”, Brianne with an I, no A and _______ with no H, two T’s and one N”. Yeah totally annoying.
