What about Ava CoolMiddleName?  That way, if she wants to go by her middle name due to the popularity of her first name, she can.

I really dislike uber popular names — well I dont dislike the names themselves but the fact that they’re so popular. I remember having a class with NINE Ashleys and 5 Heathers. Everyone was Ashley G. or Ashley H. or Ashley M. etc.  I was always the only one with my name and I loved it. Our #1 girl name was Isabella for years, then Twilight happened and now I wouldn’t ever consider using the name.

That being said, I think I’d pick a popular name that I like over a name I just plain old dislike. Ava is really pretty (its my cousin’s name, haha) so I’d definitely use that over just a name you think is so-so.

@Tomato22:  Ava is a lovely name. It is, as you mentioned, also super popular; it has been in the top ten for nearly a decade and shows no signs of slowing down yet.

If the idea of having, say, a little Madison, or Jessica, or Jennifer, or Emily, or Heather doesn’t appeal to you, you should realize that Ava will be joining the ranks of those once super-popular, extremely ubiquitous names.

But as someone who has one of those ultra-popular names, let me tell you… it’s not so bad! Nobody will ever think her name is weird, lots of other people (like those who chose it for their own children) will think it’s beautiful, and by the time she has grandkids, it will probably be coming back around as a fashionable classic again. There are worse fates.

@Tomato22:  you’re telling me! I’m due in 2 weeks and we only have 1 first name we both love and no middle name. Our name is pretty popular but we Are okay with that. I say go for the name you love popular or not!

do you like Eva? Similar but not as popular…

@Bubblesmcgee:  agreed! I had the most popular name for about 3 years during/around my birth. Even still, I don’t run into THAT many people with the name. It doesn’t bother me at all.

O I know how hard it is! I can find a few I like, he can find a few he likes, but we rarely both agree. We loved Lily forever, but like Ava it’s just so popular. And so that makes it less attractive to us. You have plenty of time…so just keep working names until something sticks. And it’s not the end of the world if you choose a really popular name if that’s what you both love!

@busybee3791:  Haha mine wasn’t anywhere near the top of the charts when my parents gave it to me, it was a family name. But when I was a tween/young teen it EXPLODED in popularity.. As a babysitter/nanny during high school and college, I used to get whiplash on the playground thinking I was being called from every direction.

I guess it’ll keep me young, right?

Yep. Hubby doesn’t like the name I’ve wanted to use since I’ve been 14, because it’s “weird”. I asked him to come up with a list of names, and he said he can’t find any he likes. Well, she needs a name, and I’ll be induced in 5 weeks, so I’d like to get this sorted out. Blah.
