Anyone doing NaNoWriMo this November? My friend and I have never done it and we decided we’re going to try. We’re getting together tonight and working on character sketches and research for our individual novels. I’m just wondering if I’m nuts for preparing the week before and not giving myself more time. What do you think? Also, previous experiences and tips are welcome. 🙂

My Fiance has snf is doing it. Once successfully; once not. According to him, the key is to get involved in the communities. The forums, the twitter, etc. They’re apperently great rescources.

I might try it sometime but at the moment the only things floating in my head for a book aren’t fiction and would be disqualified. But good luck to you!!

I did it a couple of years ago. It’s fun, but very time consuming, obviously. I wouldn’t worry about just starting to prepare now. I didn’t prepare at all beforehand, and I think that’s kind of the point. Just give it your all for 30 days and have fun!

I’m already 50,000 words into my novel, and I’m hoping to be done with the first draft the first week of November, so I won’t be doing it, but I’m always on NaNoWriMo for motivation, tips, critiques, etc.. It’s a very supportive community. Good luck! 50k in one month is hard!

I’ve tried it a few times… I think the closest I got was 15k… but hey I was in college and had exams to prep for and then I was in flight school… lol so yea I didn’t get far that year. I was actually thinking of attempting this year since I’m still jobless and I have nothing in my way to stop me!

I am not, but my husband is! I had never heard of it before, but I think I will try it next year 🙂

My sister completed it last year.
I’ve always wanted to and I very much love writing, but I simply don’t have the time this year. Just like the last 5 years. Sigh.

I am! I started a different thread about it in early October, and i got quite a few responses. I like thinking that other bees are NaNoers, too. I’ve been lurking around those boards for a while, always wanting to do it, and this year I’m going to go for it! I got involved in the local chapter and have a lot planned out. I’m excited!
I don’t think starting now is a problem. I think that is plenty of time to give youself an idea of what you want to do. If you plan too much (in my experience outside of NaNo), either you will end up scrapping some of it anyway because your story will change some as you write, or you can force it to follow your original plans, which may not work as well as you’d have expected when you first outlined it. So yeah, you should be fine 🙂 Plenty of people write from the seat of their pants, anyway.
The one tip I keep hearing about this is not to edit. If you feel like you’re writing crap, just push on through and polish it later.

I have done it before but wasn’t successful.

I just signed up… sounds pretty cool! I have several novels in my head but this will give me the kick in the pants to get at least one of them written!

I don’t know if all groups do this, but my region will be giving out beads as tangible rewards. I think we get one bead for every 1,000 words, and we get charms for achieving certain goals (hitting 1,667 the first day, getting 1/4 of the way through your word count on time, donating to OLL, etc etc).
