Have you done a google search on Native American wedding traditions?  I did, and I’m sure I’ve found what you found.  It’s confusing, isn’t it?  Each tribe has unique traditions which differ from other tribes.

Even within the Muskogee group, there are several different tribes (Creeks, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and other tribes) each with unique traditions.

I think that the best resource is going to be your fiance’s Indian family members who may know more.

Assuming that he is Creek, I went to the official Creek website so that you might find some contact information.

I think that if he is not that close to his heritage, then it would be best to do something very general such as using water as a symbol of purification and cleansing, and explaining that this is a native tradition in your program.  Here is the reference I used for that:

I’m sure you know that it is a tricky line to walk to incorporate Indian traditions in a way that honors and does not trivialize.  It sounds like you are very much wanting to be diligent about doing just that!

Please let us know if you find out anything more specific!

Oh, Erin, how awesome would it be if his grandmother would be willing to do that!?  If she doesn’t want to, I’m sure she’ll have some wonderful ideas about what you can do.  I just know that you’ll end up with something completely beautiful and meaningful!  What a wonderful resource she is.

And thanks for the huge compliment about my wedding planning skills!  It means a lot to me, since I love this stuff so much.
