1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day? English muffin with cheese or granola bar for breakfast, occasionally Cheerios with 1% milk; lunch is often leftovers, a TV dinner at work, or sometimes a sandwich or wrap I make at home; I usually cook dinner and try to make meals that are vegetable-heavy and filling with less than 800 calories per serving (about half my daily calories).

[Honestly, counting calories helped me learn what portions I need to eat – I think that made more of a difference than the types of foods I was eating, even though that’s not a very healthy way to live. If I plan my meals for the week and I’m having a soup on Monday that is 300 calories and a casserole Tuesday that is 700, then I eat a bigger lunch on Monday or have an extra snack somewhere to even it out. I don’t count macronutrients, but just try to eat mostly vegetables, a good amount of protein, and limit dairy and simple carbs. Fiance counts his macros in addition to calories, and has maintained his weight loss/muscle gain very effectively that way. We both use MyFitnessPal for this, although we’re less religious about it now that we’re maintaining weight loss than we were while losing.]

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? I eat three meals a day. When I am working (teacher) I feel better if I have a 150-200 calorie snack between breakfast at 5:30 AM and lunch at 11:40 AM, but I don’t usually bother snacking when not at work.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast). All 3 – I get hangry if I skip a meal.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? I think once a week usually, unless I’m under a lot of stress at work and can’t face cooking. Then I usually go all out on the comfort food. I’m lucky because I crave salty and fatty things, not sweet things, so I can replace a healthy meal with them instead of eating dessert on top of my meal. However, I usually just do an extra workout if I sense I’ve gone overboard.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? Yes – barre 2-3 times a week and I do the elliptical for about an hour almost every day during the summer to make up for all the calories I normally burn while teaching. (It’s a lot, By The Way.)

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry? Yes, but I’m usually hungry, so it’s not a struggle for me to eat meals at the right time. Fiance struggles with this, and has had to train himself to eat breakfast and lunch at a reasonable hour to avoid binging at dinnertime.

I am also 5’2″ and have had to deal with the fact that I can’t eat everything I want every day all the time like I could when I was younger… I don’t diet, I just try to minimize unhealthy stuff so that I enjoy it more when I do indulge. I rarely weigh myself unless I think I’ve gained weight. When I do sense that I’m getting a little larger than I’d like to be, I eat lower-calorie meals for a few days and maybe do an extra workout, and it evens out. I was 125 pounds last May and am now down to 112-113 ish.

Good luck with figuring out an eating plan that works for you! I am all for body positivity, but it feels really amazing to work toward a change in your lifestyle and actually see the evidence in your figure and feel the difference in your energy level. I think it just gives you MORE reasons to love your body.

I was a natural size 0 until 30 because I did not eat meat, about 105 at 5’4. Eating meat and fast food made me a 4. I never limit myself. I need to go back to that! Maybe that can help you.

I also worked out 3 times a week at a gym. I ate 4 meals a day plus snacks.

classylassie:   I am 5’9 and 130. I naturally stay right around there. I eat a homemade granola bar, Greek yogurt, and a banana for breakfast. Lunch is always leftovers. Dinner is a vegetarian dish such as chili, nachos, risotto, or pasta. It’s fairly high fiber and minimally processed.

I eat 3 meals at set times. I normally eat breakfast around 8, lut at noon, and dinner at 730.

I have never skipped a meal, but if I am super stuffed dinner may be an apple or banana.

I keep a candy drawer and have a piece every day. One piece is way better than a bag– no need to deprive myself. Chips don’t enter my house because I don’t understand moderation.

I am very active and run 2-3 times a week and walk a lot. At leas 15000 steps a day.

No, I need to eat and rarely get physically hungry (like starving). So I eat my meals and rarely snack.

i’m naturally thin but there have been times in my life when I was heavier than I wanted to be (i.e. heavy for my frame as I am petite). When I was heavier, I found it much easier to try to recalibrate my eating rather than try to exercise it off. I have never found that I have been able to maintain my weight through exercise, though when I do, I feel healthier/better.

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day? I eat very little meat, maybe only a few times a week at most, and eats lots of fruit and veggies (I try to snack on these too if I can, but I eat chips/popcorn/dark chocolate as snacks several times a week). I try to only cook one pasta/heavy starch meal a week though that will last probably 4 meals. I eat almost exclusively food cooked at home and make my own dressing with olive oil, lemon, and different vinegars.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? I try to eat at normal meal times but I also snack inbetween. I am bad about eating lunch really late though, and when I’m out and about, I can sometimes go way past meal time before eating and then I realize that I’m starving and need food immediately (this is most definately not healthy).

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast) I eat all three meals though breakfast is small. Maybe just some full-fat yogurt and granola or fruit, a slice or two of toast, 2 fried eggs rarely, or sometimes just coffee.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? Probably every day, but I don’t eat a lot. It can take me a week to finish a dark chocolate bar. Salty stuff though is a lot harder to moderate myself. I find that it’s easier to stay healthier overall when nothing is off limits but I only eat a small amount of it – so I regularly eat butter, full fat cheese and yogurt, chocolate, chips ect.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? Rarely – I used to be a competitive athlete but I hadly do anything now besides walk my dog (maybe an hour a day tops).

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry? Sometimes I’ll eat if I’m bored but not really. For a while when I was bigger though I didn’t eat more often but I did eat until I was really full at each meal (which is actually a pretty uncomfortable feeling). Now I just eat until I’m no longer hungry and I feel much better afterwards.

I am 29 120 pounds 5’7. I eat everything. Fried food, junk food snacks. It doesnt matter. I have two kids and its very hard for me to gain weight. I have weighed at the most 135 and thats after i had baby. I really want to be at 130 but its hard because i work in a warehouse where work is very physical.  But i am happy with myself. I constantly get rude comments about eating more but i eat more than any of my larger friends. I eat sweets everyday justas much as full meals. I eat all day. Chips sandwiches, pudding, tacos, dries chicken,  mashed potatoes. I eat out at fast food. I wish stress would make me gain but it makes me loose. Good luck

I’m 5’11 and weigh 160…size 10/11. I eat small portions several times a day and those include a mix of fruits and vegetables – raw without dips and also whole grains and lean proteins. I stay away from red meat, however, and too much pasta. I also have a very rigorous job that pushes me to walk a cumulative 2-5 miles a day (just around my building) and heavy package handling that i classify as my form of weight lifting.

The root cause of the weight gain should be examined. Talk to your doctor first, please, he/she will be able to best help you with nutritional information.

classylassie:

For reference, I’m 5’9″ and about 125-130lbs

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day? A little of everything. Lots of carbs, fruits, and a fair amount of veg. Here’s a fairly regular day:

Breakfast- bagel or oatmeal

Snack- Yogurt or string cheese and nuts

Lunch- Pasta dish with tomato sauce, maybe beef, or plain with cheese and spinach

Snack- nuts, cheese, carrots

Snack- chips or crackers or pretzels

Dinner- stuffed bell pepper (beef, tomato sauce, rice, cheese)

Snacks- stovetop popcorn, cheese, fruit, maybe something sweet like raisin bread or a few cookies

Clearly I eat a ton of cheese and carbs.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? I am definitely a grazer! I will have breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, about 2 afternoon snacks, dinner, and after dinner snacks. I’m almost always eating something. When I do have organized meals, I generally eat smaller portions than everyone else (about half of what is considered a normal portion) since I am already looking forward to eating something else as a snack later (plus, I get full)

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast) The only meal I ocasionally skip is dinner, and that’s because Darling Husband works evenings and I don’t like to cook only for myself. But it gets replaced by snacks, so it doesn’t really count as being skipped.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? Pretty much all the time. I try to be conscious of how much “bad” stuff I eat in a day (donut, chips, etc) and try to compensate the rest of the day by eating more veg and less other bad stuff. FWIW, I really don’t drink soda. I drink water all day, and sometimes tea. I do indulge in a cocktail pretty much every night.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? Not really. My job requires walking around sometimes, and we do home improvement projects on the weekends, but I hate organized exercise.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?  Oh, hell no. If I waited until I was hungry (like, I could feel it in my stomach), I’d be hypoglycemic all the time (again- I used to have this issue a lot). But I have a tendency to eat fairly low calorie density foods. (I once used myfitnesspal to track calories for about a week. I averaged less than 1800 calories per day). I will stop eating if I feel actively full, though.

I’m 24, weigh 130lbs and I’m 5’3″. I’ve been at this weight for over 2 years now and I’ve finally accepted that this is just a healthy weight for my body. This is what it likes to be at, and I am by no means overweight, but I do have “fat”, and I feel a healthy amount is very normal. If I ever were to exceed this weight, then I would take more action to exercise.

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day?

my usual meals are oatmeal w/maple syrup or eggs and toast for breakfast. Then I will usually have a snack or two (piece of fruit, veggies, nuts, corn tortilla chips) then lunch which will either be sandwich, soup and crackers or a salad. Then another snack or two. Then dinner, which varies greatly, but always includes a protien, veggies and sometimes a carb.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between?

I eat when I’m hungry (which feels like all the time), but as for times of the day that I eat, are very random. Working days I don’t eat until 9pm, and when I work night shifts i eat throughout the whole night.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast)

i never skip a meal (because I get real hangry).

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.?

i usually indulge when I feel like it. Sometimes that’s a piece of dark chocolate once a day or it could be ice cream. I eat pretty healthy so I don’t feel bad about eating it once in a while. Moderation is key.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often?

i am not religious about exercise, but I do home workouts 2-3 times a week and spend most of my days off outdoors. I like to do yoga as well. My job can also be pretty physical (12+ sets of stairs a day sometimes)

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?

most of the time, but when you eat healthy your body uses up a lot of that energy, so I really get to eat all the time which is awesome! I notice when I eat like crap I only ever want to eat like 2 times a day and my stomach is usually killing me the whole time, so that’s motivation to not eat a ton of junk food.

The less you eat junk food, the less you will crave it. I have stages of craving sweet things – I love chocolate! I am naturally a size 4 and 5’2″ with a petite frame. I think I am around 125lbs / 56kg right now, but I don’t weigh myself. I just gauge my weight by how my clothes fit me. I used to be 50kg but was still the same size in clothes as I am now- that was BEFORE I ever went to the gym 3 times a week. I haven’t worked out in years but I think I weigh more now due to the muscle I put on at gym, as well as a bit of fat that I put on since I haven’t worked out. I try to eat well for my health (I have a lot of health issues), not to keep my weight down.

Since I know I am a sweet tooth, I have found alternative healthy recipes for things such as brownies and ice cream. I eat sweet things at least once or twice a week. I eat 2 large meals a day, and I try to pack as many vegetables as I can into those meals. I also try to stick to lean meats.

Exercise wise, I try to do 10min of pilates a day – it makes me feel long and lean!

I recommend eating a high protein, low carb, low sugar diet. You’ll easily lose weight and feel a lot better as well.

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day?  I’m generally conscious of what I eat and just try to limit junk food and processed food (except breads if that counts as processed, I can’t stay away from that).  Breakfast is usually a egg/ham muffin, protein bar, greek yogurt, or some fruit just depending on what I have in the house.   Lunch is left over dinner or just a salad.  Dinner some veggie/meat combo stir fry or bake fish or chicken on salad.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between?  Yup, breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus an afternoon snack.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast).  I have to eat all my meals, I hate feeling hungry!

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.?  Sparingly, a few times a week.  If I’m too hungry before dinner, I have some chips and salsa or hummus.  That’s about as bad as I get usually.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often?  Not as much as I should.  I have stretches of time where I run about 3x a week (only about 2-3 miles each time), and stretches of time that I dont at all.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?  Yes.  If i’m not hungry, then I dont eat.

classylassie:

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day? During the week I have one piece of toast and peanut butter, a glass of milk right when I wake up (6:30 am). A snack around 9 (cookies or granola bar usually), eat lunch around 11:30 which is usually leftovers from supper. Today it’s sloppy joes. I have some fruit around 2 and supper around 5:30 – tonight it’s Tortellini, sauce and cheese. Then sometimes a snack in the evening, usually unhealthy like chips or popcorn. I don’t always have the snack though. Depends how lazy I feel and what’s available to eat.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? Snack in between. But I wouldn’t say my meal portions are that big.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast) I’ve recently started eating more of a breakfast because I’m trying to gain weight and I thought those extra calories would help. But I really could skip breakfast easily. On weekends we usually get up around 10 and make a huge breakfast (eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, etc) and then eat again at supper, so I guess we kind of skip a meal there.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? I’m not much into sweets, so I don’t usually indulge in that. But I do love my salty foods. I probably have McDonalds at least once a month.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? I’m trying to. Ideally I would like to do something every day, even if it’s just walking for half hour. I’ve probably averaged once a week this year, although I haven’t done anything in the last three weeks (I’ve had some foot issues). I started doing Zoomba at home, I’ve tried doing yoga but haven’t in awhile. And speed walking on the treadmill.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry? Usually, yes. Sometimes if I have a big lunch, I will force myself to eat supper. I actually hate the feeling of being really full.
