I’m 5’7″ – and I’m 135.  I’m athletic – and active.

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day?

Bkfst – Oatmeal; eggs/greek yogurt; turkey bacon etc  Lunch – Some kind of Fish/Veggies.  Dinner – Fish/Veggies  (I’m boring when it comes to my prepared foods).  But – when my honey and I go out – I tend to stay away from high fat/high sugar foods.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? – I do snack — on fruit, yogurt, avocado and sunflower seeds; pickels; rice cakes — :

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast) I sometimes skip… not good – but, meh…

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? I do indulge — sometimes.  Not often.  My philosopy is “moderation”

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? – Yes I do.  I run and lift.  I also walk and do pushups in the am.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry? no – sometimes I eat when I’m bored!  Totally honest!

For reference: I am 26, 5’2″, 90lbs

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day?

I start every day off with a 12 oz coffee blended with 4oz heavy whipping cream. If I eat breakfast before or at work it is a plain bagel with cream cheese, tomato, and cucumber. For lunch I pack a salad with whatever vegetables my coop provides that week and probably about 3 servings of blue cheese crumbles… addicted. Dinner varies… usually plant-based but sometimes I eat fish for protein. No red meat or pork for the past 14 years. I cook with a LOT of oils and other fats… I add some sort of fat to most things I eat.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between?

For the most part, I don’t snack. My nickname growing up was “bird”. I prefer a good meal over snacking. I do LOVE fruit though… so if I do want to pick at something… that’s usually what I’m craving. I also juice for the week on Sunday nights and freeze it so I have about 20 water bottles of juice stocked at all times. The biggest thing is that I never deprive myself… If i want a doughnut & french fries, okay body… I ‘gotchu’.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast)

I don’t make it a point to eat breakfast everyday… some days I want it and some days I don’t. I just eat when my body wants to eat.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.?

Same as above… If I want it… I have it… I just don’t want ‘snacks’ all that often.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often?

I was a competitive figure skater until I was about 20… I still teach on the side but I don’t exercise at the gym or anything like that.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?

Yep! WHENEVER my body tells me to eat… I eat!

Ive been slim my whole life with no effort whatsoever eating anything and everything.
Im in my 30s now and on my wedding day I was 118lbs im 5’3″. Within 6 months of marriage I was 134lbs. (I’ve since lost some of the weight)

I attribute this weight gain to my husband making us breakfast every day and me making us dinner every night. And then him insisting we go out for dinner sometimes too where we dont ever choose a salad for dinner. Ha!

I still “look” slim but now I have fat/curves in places and my pants fit snugger…  I want to be 118lbs again LOL though not desperately or anything.

I think for me the difference now is he has to have 3 meals a day, he needs to eat solid meals, whereas with me I would usually skip breakfast or I would have a cup of tea and something light like fruit because I wasnt always that hungry in the morning and then I would have lunch, but also I would snack all day long and I may or may not have dinner/big dinner depending on how hungry I was.  But when I did eat I ate whatever I wanted for lunch or dinner (I ate healthy things as well as “bad” things it was based on whatever I felt like eating I enjoy salads just as much as I enjoy steak so I think that balance helped).

We actually recently decided to eat better lately since we both gained a little weight and I have since lost a few pounds.

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day? Fruits, veggies, whole grains, meat and snacks.

Eg. Breakfast – tea (no sweeter thats just how ive always done it) with 100 calorie sandwhich thin 2 slices of bread w/ peanut butter and jelly.
Morning snack – fruit (an apple or some grapes etc).
second morning snack – fruit/chips (100 calorie pack) – sometimes if im hungry
lunch grilled chicken with steamed veggies OR cucumber, corn, tuna and tomato salad
desert – special k crisp
afternoon snack – 100 calorie popcorn
second afternoon snack – fruit/chips(100 calorie pack) – sometimes if im hungry
dinner – salmon, brocolli, 1/2 baked potatoe OR bowl of cereal OR chicken burger on 100 calorie sandwhich thin bread with lettuce tomatoe and mustard with a side of beets.
Desert – All natural fruit popsicle

(We have stopped keeping overly indulgent snacks/treats at home – I think this is a huge help! If its not there you cant eat it!)

Also, I drink a ton of water, always have been that way.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? Normal and snacks

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast) YES! When i was smaller I rarely ate breakfast too! Interesting because they always speak of breakfast being the most important meal of the day, but I didn’t always have it when I was much thinner…
N E Way, these days I eat 3 meals really BUT now really considering going back to skipping breakfast now… ๐Ÿ™‚

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? I indulge daily BUT I plan for it for eg. I bought the 100 calorie Special K crisps so if I want something sweet I have that vs. butterfinger from the vending machine etc. same plan for a salty snack I eat the 100 calorie white cheddar popcorn pack vs. Doritos from the vending machine. On the weekends if we go out to eat we get desert and split it or I get a small of whatever it is, I do not deprive myself and I have a huge sweet tooth.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? I excercise periodically and have been this way throughout my life, everthing form Aeorobics to kick boxing to walking. These days im doing the walking about 20 minutes 3 times a week.  I go through periods of no exercise at all as well.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?
Mostly yes, I only eat when Im hungry and when I am busy I can go without eating (which could be good or bad).

The main thing is to be healthy I get physicals every year and have no health issues so my diet/weight is a personal preference for me since I’m already healthy as it is.

That said, my recommendation is PLEASE dont beat yourself up. Figure out the healthy/good foods you like to eat (this may take some time and expirementation) and build your main meals around them and plan for your snacks if you are a snacker. And dont deprive yourself its all about portion control that way you dont overdo it.

I can totally relate to your post so best of luck to you! ๐Ÿ™‚

classylassie:

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day?

I’m a big carb person-it’s bad, but I love them. I’ll usually have a bagel in the morning, before I head into work. For lunch, I’ll make myself a turkey sandwhich. A snack before dinner, I’ll usually have a banana. For dinner, it’s always up in the air. Pasta, Mac and Cheese, rice and chicken. It depends on how lazy I am.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between?

I snack in between if I have time, but if not, then no. Usually I’m at work, or my internship, so I can’t really snack.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast).

Sometimes I skip lunch (if I’m at work). But I NEVER skip breakfast, and almost never skip dinner.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.?

Whenever I felt like I deserve it. I worked a really crappy week? I’ll finish off a bag of reeces cups. I just got off a really long work shift? I’ll order a pizza and finish it all.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often?

I don’t, know. But for my serving job, I’m always standing and rushing around.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?

I try to only eat when I’m hungry. If I’m bored, I’ll find something to do to get my mind off eating. I make sure to drink lots of water, too-sometimes you mix up being thirsty with hungry.

Overall, I basically eat what I want, but in small portions. To me, portions are everything. You CAN have cookie-just have one cookie. You CAN have pasta with alfredo sauce-just on a small plate. I also eat very slowly. I picked up a weird habit when I was young-any food that you can eat with your hands (sandwiches, pizza, burgers, etc) I always tare apart into smaller pieces, eat, then tare a piece, then eat, until it’s gone. I just do it, but my mom has a theory that’s how I stay thin. She thinks taring the food takes me longer to eat, so I eat slower, and register more quickly when I am full (the faster you eat, the harder time you have doing that).

But I’m going on 22, and might still have a high metabolism. I’m currently 5’5, and 122 pounds…but I’ve been that weight since my junior year of High School, now in my senior year of college, so who knows. During the semester, I’ll try and go to the gym and walk and rush on the treadmill for 30 minutes. That’s it though!

Naturally thin here…have been a 4 forever (although I do fit into some 6s). I don’t eat much processed food at all and I eat almost what I want but in good portions. I think that is the key – not to deprive yourself but make sure the portions are small and spread throughout the day (although I would love to gain 10 pounds myrself).

classylassie:  5’5″, 115 pounds.  I have pretty much followed the paleo diet since my teens, (before it was known as the paleo diet).   In other words, I eat lots of veggies, moperate amounts of meat and very little dairy and even less gluten.

polyblonde:  I so appreciate your comment.

This totally resonates with me especially the part about listening to your body and some days varying between eating 1-3 “real meals” plus snacks etc. This was basically me before marriage.

I think since we got married I have adopted his eating habits (what he needs-3 full meals a day) because yes its nice to have breakfast and dinner with each other every day when in reality it may be more food than what my body calls for which obviously explains my weight gain.

Definitely going to pay more attention to going back to listening to MY body now…makes a ton of sense.

Naturally thin bee here ( 5’5 and 115 lbs)

I eat eggs and fruit with peanut butter for breakfast every day (AND TONS OF COFFEE!!!), for lunch most days I have a salad with left over meat and then for dinner I usually have some sort of veg with meat and a few days a week there will maybe be pasta, rice, quinoa, sweet potato, ect

I drink a ton of water, at least 3-4 L a day, I have a hard time deciding when the “right time/treat” is so usually I try to abstain, especially from sugary things.  I have almost no concept of moderation when it comes to salty and so my usual cheat meal (once or twice a week) will be a burger and fries sort of meal.

I’m currently injured so I’m not exercising but usually I run, lift and do yoga.  Sometimes you have to retrain your brain to think different things are treats, like delicious fruits or an afternoon coffee!

I’m 6 weeks out from my wedding so I’m trying to eat really clean for my dress fittings in the next few weeks so I’m not bloated/feeling pudgy

Have you had your thyroid tested? I am more petite becuase my metabolism is just really fast. I dont watch what I eat, although I try to eat healthy due to chronic migraines, and I get full pretty easily. I also just tend to eat smaller portions, and find I get less sick that way (I also have IBS). Anyway, about 7 years ago, I gained about 15 pounds because my thyroid was low. You said you had some hormonal issues, so wondering if maybe your thyroid is a factor??

1) I eat gluten free, mostly dairy free foods. I try to stick with more ccarbs earlier in the day (cereal for breakfast), and protein as the day goes on. I probably dont eat enough veggies, but try to at least with dinner.

2) I Snack about once a day in between meals, but sometimes I forget.

3) I eat breakfast and dinner, sometimes I skip lunch because it makes me feel so groggy to eat a lot during the afternoon.

4) I indulge when I am stressed, or hormonal, but I usually regret it as I have IBS and migraines. And i just hate feeling bloated and full. Once in awhile, I do have dessert (about twice a week).

5) I walk my dog daily, and I am trying to inorporate pilates and yoga as I have scoliosis.

6) Yes, although I try to always force myself to eat a little bit 3x a day so i can avoid blood sugar crashes. I tend to eat less during lunch, to avoid the food coma feeling.

Loseit.com is a great app/site for counting calories and and tracking meals. I really think it can help you learn proportions and what you should be eating. Use a BMR calculator to figure out how many calories a day is recommended for you. I find that changing your lifestyle is the best way to loose weight – not being restrictive. Sticking to whole foods is always best – fruits, veggies, nuts, grains, meats. Try to avoid the processed stuff in packaging / shop the outer primeter of the grocery store.

Happy Hopeful Bee:  Aw i’m glad it helped ๐Ÿ™‚

Totally understand where you’re coming from, and I have struggled with that too before. Especially now we have totally different schedules, but I also hate to miss out on that time together — I make slow cooker meal for husband a couple times a week and i will hang out with him while he eats whether i am also eating or not — i also prepare different food for myself if I don’t feel like eating the same thing he is eating. When you do want to share a meal but it’s not ‘ideal’ for you, you can still ‘listen’ by eating slower and stopping when you feel full. So you end up sharing the meal, but eating the right portion ๐Ÿ™‚

pinkshoes:  for me my working out is more about attaining the body composition and look/tone I want, and of course being healthy and strong. If I were to stop working out I probably wouldn’t gain much, but my muscle would replace itself with fat and I would not look lean and toned or have the same energy levels.

Even when I had the worst lifestyle of my life (processed food, tons of partying, sporatic workouts w/ no lifting etc) and as a result was at my heaviest, i was still a size 2. So i think a lot of ppl are ‘naturally thin’ whether they work out or not…but they choose to work out anyway  because of how it impacts how they look and feel in ways beyond size or number on the scale.

For reference, I am 5’11” and 141 lbs

1) What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day?

I am a whole foods, high carb-low fat (HCLF) vegan, so I eat a ginormous fruit-packed smoothie for breakfast, usually a huge salad with beans/quinoa/couscous/tofu toppings or a massive amount of rice for lunch, and then a carb-filled dinner of my choice (tons of pasta with tomato sauce, steamed and heavily seasoned potatoes, etc).

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between?

I snack whenever I feel hungry or low on energy in between three large meals, and I usually snack on fruits and veggies.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? (I know when I was smaller I rarely ate breakfast)

I can’t skip meals. I’m diabetic (a rare form called MODY), and when I don’t eat for a while I get really hypoglycemic and HANGRY.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.?

Sticking within the guidelines of a vegan diet, I feel like I indulge a lot. For dessert I make “nice cream”, where I process the crap out of frozen fruit in my Vitamix until it has a creamy consistency like ice cream. I’ll eat a bowl of it that’s the size of my head.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often?

I love to do Shaun T’s Insanity workout a couple times a week alternating with weight lifting a couple times a week, for a total of about 4-5 workout days.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry?

For the most part, yes. Switching to this lifestyle has put me more in tune with eating only when I actually need to. But I also am better now about not beating myself up if I mindlessly snack here and there.

And I want to put this out there…I have a strong background in science (biology, biochemistry, and chemistry). The human body is capable of surviving on two types of fuel: glucose or ketones. Most people survive on glucose, and any additional fat you ingest is largely unnecessary (some fat is needed, but a LOT less than people think), and that’s when you get cardiovascular problems and weight gain. When eating a high carb/low fat diet, the body is often capable of burning off excess calories you take in when they are from carbs via heat; most people say ‘a calorie is a calorie’, but it’s just not true.

What paleo/keto dieters are doing is switching the body’s source of fuel over to ketones, which come from fat. When you eat a high fat/low carb diet, your body will switch to using ketones in a state known as ketosis.

Either method will likely lead to weight loss, but I personally was miserable trying to be in ketosis because I love carbs way too much. Also, though it’s counter intuitive, my blood glucose levels decreased to a normal range after going HCLF vegan.

I’m super skinny (5’5 45kg ~100lbs) and I eat like crap! Thanks for posting this thread because I need to get better eating habits! I am lucky to not be able to gain weight, but Fiance not so much, I also want our future kids to be healthy!

I won’t go into my eating habits because it is not going to help you.

classylassie: i am 5’1 and weigh roughly 100lbs, am pretty toned i guess.

1)What kinds of foods you eat in a typical day? I eat a lot of oatmeal, granola, apples with peanut butter, sandwiches, crackers with cheese, salads, leftovers from dinner the night before, etc. I’m a big snacker.

2) Do you only eat a “normal” meal times, or do you snack in between? I snack. All day. Which is apparently good for boosting your metabolism.  I tend to get hypoglycemic if I don’t eat at least every 2.5-3hrs.

3) Do you eat all 3 meals or do you sometimes skip meals here or there? I try not to skip. I might not eat at the same time everyday, but if I’m not snacking I’m definitely trying to hit at least the 3 meals a day.

4) How often do you “indulge,” be it with sweet things, salty things, other junk food, etc.? I indulge too often lol. I’m a bit of a chocolate addict. But the trick is to just not have it in the house.

5) Do you exercise? What kind and how often? I don’t exercise on a strict schedule, but I do enjoy doing yoga and biking.

6) And the last one that I tend to struggle with: Do you only eat when you feel physically hungry? Yes and no. It depends on what I’m doing. I find I binge more when I’m bored, but sometimes I will eat when I dont necessarily feel hungry because I know I’ll be hungry later and if I’m at work I won’t necessarily have the chance to eat before I’m ready to keel over (retail job)
