We are having an enchanted forrest feel. A mix of tree centerpieces and flower arrangements on top of tree slices. Fiance and I love to garden- something most know about us, so we would like to give a gardening type of favor. We figured a plant people could enjoy longer than a candle or an edible. We also thought they would look great on the table. So these are the options we have found and we need your vote!
1. Seedling of an ever green tree– could be kept indoors for a short time, but will need to put put outside eventually.

2. A potted succulent – easy to care for indoor plant

3. Seed in a box– These grow into trees and the boxes come in a variety of colors, another tree that would have to be planted outside at some point

4. Palm plant – would have to be kept indoors where we live, but would make a nice potted plant for a house, depending on what size they were, we would probably not add these to the table

5. Jade plant- easy indoor plant (would pick the beige container)

@SparkleBee11: I would go with a houseplant, things that need to be planted outside usually end up in the trash, so while a nice idea, they rarely get planted.
I would go with a small potted plant that’s hard to kill and doesn’t flower ๐
Jade, Palm or Succulent ๐

@SparkleBee11: Personally I’d go with the jade plant or the succulent. The issue with the succulent is that they need drainage and most diy-succulent favors I’ve seen don’t seem to take this into account and put them in containers with no hole in the bottom, so keep that in mind.
I think the palm is pretty but a pretty huge favor so I think a lot of people might find it cumbersome to take home. The trees are a lot of commitment. I don’t know where you’re from or what your guests are like, but being from California where we have crazy high property prices, most people I know either live in apartments or do not have a large yard so there’s no way they would plant a tree.

I voted the succulent, but would also like the jade or the palm plant. I have received an evergreen seeding before and never did anything with it. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t plant a seed – I would leave it in the hotel room or just throw it away.

If you have any guests from overseas, they won’t be allowed to take live plants back to their homes.

If I HAD to choose I guess I would say succulent or jade but, to be honest, I probably wouldnt take any type of plant home.

@Horseradish: no guests from over seas ๐
Exactly what I was thinking, Fiance is dead set on the idea of a tree! Hopefully with the comments, he will be easier to talk out of giving someone a tree. He doesnt understand how someone could throw out a baby tree- I tried to explain that not everyone cares/ has time/or a place for a tree. I myself would not care if people threw it out, I feel thats typical of all wedding favors.

@gelaine22: yes I would expect some people leaving them behind, as with all favors- some people just arent that in to host’s choice. I never take anything engraved with the bride and groom’s name/wedding date etc.

@SparkleBee11: I have a story for your hubby then. I went to a wedding that gave out baby trees. The vast majority were left behind, so not only did the guests not want them but then you guys will be stuck with throwing away all thoes baby trees if you don’t own a farm, and yeah I took one, to be polite mainly. I put it on the porch, yeah I’m not a gardner, and there it whitered and died.

@SparkleBee11: I think your ideas of plants are sweet, especially the baby evergreen, but if you want me to be blunt, I think 3/4 if not almost all of them will not actually end up getting planted, which is a shame, but most people do not have green thumbs, or places to plant an evergreen.
I would go with the jade and do something to personalize the little vase, maybe an engraving or tag attached with a great quote about love or something.

I’d go with a houseplant, not everyone has space for a pine tree in their yard (and not everybody has a yard either). I voted jade because I think it’s a little more unique

Eh go with food, people were literally stealing each others favors of chocolate from my wedding. I had a friend complain that someone took hers. I ended up with 0 leftovers.

I have to agree that I would be likely not to take one since they all seem like sort of a pain to transport. I kill all plants anyways ๐
But I do love succulents, so that’s what I voted for.

I voted for jade, because it’s a little different. I’ve had a potted jade plant for a long time at work, and I love how low-maintenance it is! In my experience succulents are a little harder to keep healthy, so I wouldn’t give them out to guests. Make sure whichever plant you pick is one you love, because you’ll probably have lots left over – every wedding I’ve ever been to had tons of leftover favors.
Also, maybe think of a plan to take the leftover plants home – tell your vendors they can take one home if there are any left over, or have your coordinator hand them out to catering staff, if you don’t want tons at your house.
To be honest, I would LOVE to get a tree as a wedding favor, we have a big garden and I love plants. But even just a year and a half ago, I was living in apartment and wouldn’t have been able to keep a tree once its roots outgrew the container. So smaller plants that don’t require big containers (or outdoor planting!) are probably more practical for the average wedding guest.

@Atalanta: Fiance would find a place to plant them and I think he would be sooo very happy if people left them behind… I tried to explain thats the opposite purpose of a favor. ๐ I have tried to emphasize people would likely kill them.
