our dog has been chewing and licking on his tail to the point where there are sores and its bleeding. I have tried wrapping it and putting some ointment but that only seems to draw more attention and he usually finds a way to get it unwrapped. I dont want to take him to the vet if I dont have to b/c it would just cost too much money. We have a 3 month old baby and havent been spending as much time playing with him so I’m thinking he started doing it because he got bored or maybe it itches. I kind of feel bad about it b/c I cant give him all the attention now. Any advice on what I can do to get him to stop?

Have you checked him for fleas? Even one flea could cause major issues. Also, with the change in weather, he could be experiencing dry skin. Try giving him oatmeal baths to soothe the itching. Or, he could have developed allergies. We had a shi-tzu that would chew incessantly on his paws and we found out through the vet that he was allergic to most dog foods. We switched him to Iams Lamb and Rice formula, and it helped a lot. We also gave him oatmeal baths for the itching.

have you tried google-ing it and seeing what other people are saying about it? i would call the vet and ask them what they think might be the problem. Our dog developed a bald spot on his back where the tail begins and found out that science diet was the reason why he was developing it. We switched him to natural balance and its working for him..

I would give him a bath with an oatmeal or anit-ich shampoo and conditioner and then a benadryl. What size is he? Our two dogs get either a half (9 lbs dog) or whole (22 lbs dog) benadryl 2-3 times a day when their allergies are bad (usually no more than 2 cuz I don’t like giving them a lot of medicine if I don’t have to).
Honestly thought if that doesn’t help I would take him to the vet, esp with the bleeding and open sores. He may need some stronger medicine. I just had to suck it up and take our small dog to the vet because he allergies were so bad and the benadryl wasn’t helping.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog.
I found this site on the subject. I hope it helps.

If the dog has sores and it is bleeding, you might want to take it to a vet or it might get infected and cost you more.
Is it a long tail? My dog’s tail was clipped (German Shorthair) and it… itches. She has always chewed on the end of it. It seems to just bother her. But, it sounds like your dog just started doing this…
