So I just learned that a maid of honor and matron of honor were different things. I’ve already chosen my Maid/Matron of Honor but also want my sister in law to be recognized as she’s very important to me and will be doing most of the planning with me (my Maid/Matron of Honor lives on the other side of the country). So, what’s the big difference between the two? Do people have both just to recognize more than 1 person? What would their tasks look like? Or would it be split?

Typically, the Maid of Honor is single and the Matron of Honor is married. I think that typically people only have one or the other. I chose to have both though.
My maid of honor is the one who is doing all of the work because my sister (my matron) lives several hours away. I love my sister dearly though so I gave her the title of Matron as more of a symbolic thing.

I have two Maids of Honor. They do as much or as little as you ask of them..no big difference…matron of honor literally is just because she is married.

I had a maid and matron of honor. It worked out well for me because I couldn’t choose between my two best friends. One was married and one wasn’t so it was easy to give them both that title. Luckily for me, they are also best friends so they just split the duties equally. However, I know there were some problems because they both had their own visions of how they wanted things to work and they got in a few arguments because of it. However, if I had to do it over I would not have changed a thing. I wanted them both to have that special honor!

The difference is really just that Maid is single and Matron is married… I was in a wedding as the Maid of Honor and there was also a Matron of Honor – We basically split/shared typical Maid/Matron of Honor duties
