Personally, if I had a $2,000 budget, I would look at James Allen. You can get a high quality ring like this:

Just had a thought – are you able to buy the setting only at zales? You could get a moissanite or a Blue Nile stone and have it set in the centre?

I also second the wedding band thing, I ended up ordering several and returning before I was sure. And the one i went with didn’t match!!!

I’m firmly in the hate quads camp. I think that honestly, the reason the quads have such a bad reputation is, quite frankly, they look cheap. They look like they are trying to be far more expensive and larger than they actually are. I don’t mean to be rude, but that’s what I think when I look at them, & I think that’s what a lot of women think. Clusters are different somehow. I can’t explain why, they just are. Of course my opinion doesn’t matter. Nor does the opinion of anyone here.

What matters is what your girlfriend is going to like. I would suggest visiting a few jewelers before making a decision. I would also suggest asking her friends, her mother, anyone who knows her well. Chances are, somebody has a pretty good idea of what she will like. As a million other people have suggested, look at James Allen and Blue Nile because they have such low prices on such quality diamond, since they lack the overhead of mall chains. If nothing else, this will give you an accurate reflection of what prices should be.

I personally hate quads.

Have you looked into CZs? I’m a professional woman and we both make decent money. But at the time we were looking we were also planning a trip to Japan. So we needed our money to stretch. So we decided to get a CZ (from the advice of our jewler of a very high scalce place) My setting is a platinum Tacori, so it wasn’t cheap, but we decided to use the diamond mooney for something else. The plan was to upgrade to a diamond later on.

But now we have a house and I’d rather have a new kitchen than $5000 on my finger. And the quality of CZ, no one can tell the difference.

(The dirty little secret of jewlery stores is that many of the rings displayed are CZs for insurance reasons. When they take it to the back to ‘clean it’ they are swaping out the stone or the ring for a duplicate.)

So my advice, if she’s okay with it, find a setting she loves, then have a CZ put in it the size you want to upgrade to in the future.

Countdown3:  Does your gf have a pinterest board? Maybe you should have a friend check that out. Us ladies cannot resist pinning a good ring!
